BenQ DQ60 or Pioneer 110D?
Posted by Mike on April 15th, 2006

This Pioneer 107D died and I'm shopping for another burner. Should I get the
BenQ DQ60 or the Pioneer 110D? They are both $40 at the local retailer

No experience with the BenQ, but I've been very happy with the 110D I
got last month to replace a DVR-104 that finally wore out. It's been
absolutely terrific; I'd gladly recommend it.

I have a Pioneer 110D myself and really like it. But I see the DQ60 will
burn DVD-RAM and the 110D won't.

Otherwise, the spec look similar:

Not true! The DVR-110D can be easily cross-flashed with 110 firmware
-- the latest is Pioneer 1.39 (or even better -- Buffalo 8.39, if you
want the addition of bitsetting for kludgey DVD+R media). If you also
want the drive to be RPC-1 (region free), then get your firmware at:

<http://tdb.rpc1.org/#DVR110>

I've done it myself (with Buffalo 8.39 firmware) for my (at one time)
110D writer. It is now a 110 and is perfectly compatible with DVD-RAM
media (I've tested it and can verify this). In fact my DVD burning
software reads it now as a pure 110 writer, and not a 110D anymore.

I'm reading mixed reviews about the BenQ 60. Its actually a rebadged crap
drive. I bought the 110D and it kicks ass. It rips a DVD very fast. I notice
these Pioneers don't last long. The previous burner died after only 2 years.
Since the 110D was only $40, it is well worth the money even if it dies
after the 1 year warranty expires

about $36 online.
The Pioneer is a drop slower than the BenQ, but also has more stable
recording characteristics and is less picky about discs. Google around
for reviews if you want to read for yourself.

I'd buy the Pioneer.

Nice tip unclejr!

Looks like there are a lot of Pioneer fans here.

From what I can see, you can also flash the 111D so that it supports writing
to DVD-RAM discs (a la 111)... it does make you wonder why anyone would
bother paying the extra for the 111 when the 111D is the same drive but with
a firmware revision that has DVD-RAM deactivated...

I've also heard rumours that it's possible to flash the 111D so that it
supports all the same features as the 111L including LightScribe and
QuietDrive...

Pioneer 106 and still going strong after 2+ years and 700+ DVD's

I guess it depends on how many DVD's you burned. I burned around 2,000 discs
and maybe only 10 coasters. The first symptom was the drive couldn't read
burned DVD's anymore. Then it couldn't read retail DVD's anymore. Then every
burn was a coaster. Since the 111D is out I took the 110D back for refund
and bought a 111D at newegg.com for $38. The 111D claims to burn DVD-RAM

106, 109, 110D.

Gave the 106 to my brother-in-law, but I still have to install it in his
computer.

You act like that's a major undertaking... It's not like installing a
transmission in his car! Plugging in two cables into the back of the
drive is all there is to it. I think that you BIL can handle that on
his own.

That's certainly true.

That sounds about right for me, as well... and about 8/10 of those
coasters were my own damn fault!
