The process of backing up a movie is as follows:
1. Decrypting.
2. Compressing. Assuming you're not using DL media, a typical
commercial movie DVD averages 6-8Gigs once you include the extras, and
with the more recent movies, even just the actual movie takes up more
space than the 4.7Gigs that a single layer disc holds. Like this very
paragraph, it's the phase that takes the longest.
3. Burning.
Usually, you can cut time down on the compression phase a bit by
reducing the amount of analysis you put the video through. The image
quality will suffer though.
For example, if you enable all the quality settings in DVDShrink, the
compression phase can take as much as 2 hours on my computer.
Disabling them, it can complete in 20 minutes. The image quality
difference is noticeable, but it may be acceptable, depending on
personal preference.
