Can I connect to sound system?
Posted by geezer on April 24th, 2006

My RV has a built in sound system, though cheap it is.
It consists of several ceiling speakers and a AM/FM/Cassette radio.
The radio has an input plug on the front that I assume is audio.

I have a DVD player that of course has audio/video plugs that connect
nicely to my separate TV.

If I remember correctly, the DVD player will play music disks through
the TV. The RV is at a campground and I haven't seen it yet this
year.

I remember that the audio connectors that work for the TV connection
will not fit the plug on the front of the radio. I tried it, because
I thought it would be nice to play music all over the RV.

Can I do that? What wires? You tell me what & I'll buy it to take up
to the campground next visit. Or tell me to forget it.

Thanks

Well it would help if we knew what plugs the one in the RV takes. I
have a feeling it may be those little mono jacks, in which case you
would either need a lead with those on one end or a normal AV/RCA type
lead and a couple of adapters which slip in one end

Any help? Or maybe it is a large single stereo or small single stereo
jack?

RCA. The end for the radio is smaller, and maybe it is a 'little mono
jack'. I don't know what that is, but I'll take a look-see.

Thanks

It would help a lot if you mentioned what the plugs are "on the front
of the radio". Odds are pretty good it's a 1/8" Sony Miniplug
(probably stereo). Beyond that, it's still possible to hook something
into an automotive audio system, but it sounds like you're renting
this beastie, and renters tend to frown upon "end user modifications"

If that's the case, it's pretty easy to get an adapter cable for RCA
stereo to miniplug from your local stereo shop or (shudder) SourceCC
or (double shudder) RadioShack.

Thanks.

Or a 'little stereo jack'...like this:

I first went to Radio Shack, the generic place to look. Only I couldn't
find any such cable there, after looking for a reasonable time. I get
the feeling that Radio Shack isn't what it used to be...

Then I went to Fry's, since they sell many, many items. However, their
site is currently experiencing difficulties. Severe ones.

So we both are introduced to a new resource :-)

I have no idea what sort of place Cables To Go is, I just found it with
Google while writing this post...

If it's a single socket it's probably a streo jack. It is quite easy
to get a 3.5mm stereo to rca, they use them for all sorts of things
