Can only burn at a max of 4X on my NEC ND-2510A
Posted by Patrick Michael on December 31st, 2004

I'm using a spindle of 8x Ridata DVD-R's that I bought off NewEgg. My drive
supposedly supports a writing speed of 8X to DVD-R. That can be verified
here, as well as other sources on the internet -
http://www.dealsurprise.com/necnd8xdvrwd1.html (note: I bought this drive
from newegg, not this retailer)

However, no matter which burning program I use, the maximum speed it ever
lets me select is 4x. I've verified this with Roxio Easy Media Creator,
Deep Burner, and even the built-in burning feature that comes with DVD
Decrypter. Is this a problem with the media not actually being 8x capable?
This would be very strange to say the least, as I have not had a single
problem with any of the DVD-R's I have burned yet...it's just that they
don't seem to want to burn at the correct speed. It's really frustrating to
spend the extra money for an 8X drive and 8x media and then only get half
the speed.

It could be the media. Are you using the latest firmware?

This has been reported for some time now. What makes it even
odder, is that the Ridata DVD+R 4X that I bought off NewEgg,
burns at 6X, on my NEC ND-2510A. This is with the stock
firmware (2.15). The disks are RICOHJPNR01 02h.

I'm using the firmware it came with, which I assume is 2.15 since it says
this in Driver Details:
IDE\CDROM_NEC_DVD_RW_ND-2510A____________________2.15____\5&211F198B&0&0.0 .0

Is there a newer firmware avaiable that would fix this? And what would I
use to flash it?

That's all well and good, but I don't feel like buying another drive after I
spent about $80 on this one back in August. What can I do to ensure that I
buy media that will actually burn at 8x in the future? I feel a little
ripped off. I don't know who is to blame..the media makers or NEC, but
either way, it sucks.

I only got 4x on Ritek 8x DVD+R media, until I uprev'd the
firmware to 2.18. Then I was able to do 8x on the Ritek 8x.
And I can do 16x on TY 8x media ... well, the write speed
varies by "zone", so I'm really seeing 12x average. Total
burn time for a full disk is about 6 min 25 sec.

BTW, the original firmware was 2.16. For that firmware,
NEC's web site listed a bunch of media brands and types,
along with the claimed write speed for each. And it showed
the actual write speed for each type of medium, which is
set in the firmware. The results I got (4x writes on 8x
Ritek media) was in agreement with the manufacturer's claim.

Again, the revised firmware produced good improvement.

The first link also has NEC's recommended media list. You can also

I upgraded to the 'official" NEC 2.17 firmware, but it didn't seem to do any
good. I'm hesitant to install any of the hacked firmwares, but I'm
wondering if anybody on here has had success with them?

I had no problem burning 4x Verbatim media at 8x on my NEC 2500. These will
now burn at 12x on my NEC 3500.

There is always a risk in firmware flashing - even official ones.

However, I done 4 firmware flashes today without any problems.

Thanks Doug. Is there any one in particular you would recommend for the
2500/2510? I was reading the cdfreaks forum, and a lot of people seemed to
say that the 2.F8_QB3.rar worked well.

I've tried several of them and finally settled on the Mad Dog 2F8. It
has riplock removed and allows bitsetting on both SL and DL +R media.
There's also a version with RPC1 added for region free.

You might want to look through the NEC forum on www.cdrfreaks.com.
Lots of good info there on the NEC drives.

It can, but you had to use the correct (listed) media. This is
true for all DVD-RW Drives. It's like the FSB/Memory speed
ratings of your Motherboard, it'll work with the listed memory,
and only might work with other memory that has the same rating.

Unfortunately, I was too. It says right on the box that it's Ridata 8x
DVD-R. Unfortunately, there was no "code" listed anywhere on the box nor on
newegg's site (at least from what I remember). I think these are the
problems that can be run in to while DVD burners are still relatively new.
