- Disappearing Products
- Posted by Ven Hawkins on February 24th, 2005
Why is it everytime I find a product I like they stop making it? I use
inkjet printable DVD-Rs. I used Pioneer DVD-Rs for a while but they
stopped making it. I cast about for a while until deciding upon
Memorex. Now that's apparently gone away.
I'm wary of brands I've never heard of, so I'm looking for a good name
brand inkjet printable DVD-R. The printable surface must cover the
entire surface, which is pretty hard to determine online.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Ven Hawkins

Pioneer never made them. They just bought whatever was cheap and stuck their
name on them.
This is all you need to know:

Try Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim/MCC printables. Everything else is second

Proof? None.
I've burned over 1000 Riteks in the last month, not one single problem.
Go Ritek.

That was not my experience. That is proof enough for me.

Taiyo Yuden do not work well in panasonic recorders and neither does
Verbatim/MCC media.
There is no one disc that works in every drive or player.
Some like Princo because there players will play them. However most
people don't like Princo because their players don't handle them.
Most used to like Ritek, however ritek 8x are basically all crap.
Ritek 4x are good but are no longer made.
Buy a few of each and try in your dvd player. If it works in that and
your mates players then buy that brand and hope the hell the makers
don't move to a cheaper disc.
All brands have a good grade and a poor cheaper grade disc.
Take verbatim for instance. The datalife media is the cheaper trash.
the better verbatims are the more pricy datalifeplus but even these
balk in the stand alone panasonic or pioneer recorders.
dvd+r is one to stay the hell away from. It only works in a very few
players. I rather take my chances with princo rubbish than ever use a
dvd+r of any brand.
In summing up. Buy what works with your player and mates players and
all you can do is hope the maker of that brand doesn't start messing
around with new dyes which often have new problems.

I own a e55 and e85 and the Taiyo Yuden disks don't always work.
About 30%+ fail which is unacceptable. Near trhe end of a recording I
get a recover error message and when it recovers it comes up with
unable to finalize.
Hence I don't use Taiyo Yuden anymore.
Maybe you have a different batch to the few times I bought and tried
them. All I can say is I have had a bad experience on my two panny
recorders. The Taiyo Yuden work well in my pioneer 109 though but
can't play back in as many players.

+R and -R, IIRC they are about 46$ for a spindle of 50. I picked up a
spindle of +R's but havent tried them yet, I may take them back and
exchange them for -R's as I seem to have better luck with them playing
in all my DVD players, plus I will be sending slideshows etc.. to
relatives and I'm not sure if they have newer players or not....

I've had nothing but problems with Verbatim and my player. Never again!
Ritek works great!
