- Does anyone else burn DVD's at 2X?
- Posted by Axel Van Kampen on December 4th, 2003
My burner supports 4X writing but I've read that it can cause compatability
issues with certain players so I deliberately burn at 2X.
Needless to say, i'm not the least bit interested in any new 8X burners.
Any thoughts on this?
PS. CAM, don't bother responding to this because:
1. I am not interested in your opinion.
2. I killfiled you ages ago, so save your keystrokes.

If you use good media you should be able to rip and burn at top speed with
no effect on player compatibility. I routinely rip at 8X+ and burn at 4X
with zero problems on my three players or those of the few friends and
relatives I loan discs to. The only reason I can think of to burn slower is
if the source disc is scratched and you hope to get better error correction.

I have a spindle of Sony 2x DVD-R just cause it was a generic price.
I use 2x, and 4x. I have had any problems with the 4x media and
compatibility (Ritek04) .
If you can buy 4x cheap, and your drive was made for it, you shouldnt have
any problems.

Not to fan a flame, but Cam's constant support of the Pie'n'Ear AO6
could well be because it only burns at 2.4X. I wonder what would
happen to compatibility, including on cheaper disks, if other machines
were forced to 2X.

Well, I don't know about the compatibility issue with 4x, I haven't seen it
on any of the 4x discs I've burnt so far (knock on wood). But there's
another reason that many might choose to continue to use 2x burning. Buying
2x media is getting dirt cheap! I buy both 4x and 2x. If I need a bunch done
in a hurry, 4x. If I can afford the time, I use the 2x media. It's nice
having options.
Yeah, I'm sooooo glad CAM's giving us a 3 month break from his BS.

CAM? CAM who?
The Pioneer also rips at a mere 2X, which is one reason I went with the
LiteOn 411S for 8X rips and 4X burns.
I keep a spindle of cheap 2X -R and a spindle of not quite so cheap 4X +R
handy. Both work great.
I use the 4X when I need to get back to the PC quickly -- I can rip and burn
a single-layer DVD start to finish in less than 20 minutes. If I'm doing
something else and can start the process and walk away, the 2X saves me a
few pennies.
I can't tell any difference in quality or compatibility on the half-dozen or
so players I've tried them on.
Anybody who says that only Pioneer can make good drives and all others are
crap needs to take a three-month vacation to clear his head, and maybe read
an article or two on the technical advantages of the +R format ;>)

No problem, GMAN.
Nobody said Pioneer didn't make good drives. My argument with CAM centered
on his obvious double standard.
If someone with a Pioneer complained of a bad burn or incompatibility, he'd
tell them to buy better media or update the firmware.
If someone posted the exact same complaint about a different drive, he'd
tell them it was crap and they should junk it and buy a Pioneer.
In fact, the good advice that applies to the Pioneer applies to every other
brand.
I have two LiteOn burners now, and have never had a single reason to
complain. I haven't had "endless media issues," perhaps because I went to
the trouble of researching my purchases beforehand instead of just walking
into CompUSA and buying the cheapest discs on sale. Even the mighty Pioneer
gags on some of that crap.
LiteOn has done an excellent job of ironing out compatibility bugs, and now
even the trickiest discs seem to be working pretty well. Check the review
and forums at www.cdfreaks.com and you'll see a much higher percentage of
happy campers than in the first couple of months their burners were on the
market.
CAM is an easy target for jokes because he's such a shameless Pioneer fanboy
and -R bigot.
It's like Ford vs Chevy, AMD vs Intel, ATI vs Nvidia, etc. There are pros
and cons to any product. But holy wars based on blind brand loyalty are
silly if all it boils down to is "I bought it, so it has to be the best."
Just add the words "one of" to the above statement, and you won't get any
argument out of me.

Yup, that's my main problem with CAM's "advice" as well. Rather than try to
assist the user with technical suggestions, he likes to call them an idiot
for not buying a Pioneer A06. The world is more than just black and white,
instead tons of colors. Just like there are tons of reasons for choosing
different media, different burners, and different methods of authoring. No
single way is "the right way". In most cases, there are plenty of options.
Most intelligent people understand this, and I don't count CAM as part of
that group.
I too own a Pioneer A06. I also own a Pioneer A03 and a Sony 500a. They all
work, all burn DVD-Rs or DVD+Rs (except the A03). Do I like my A06? Yes, it
works great. But so do the others. When the 8x drives start getting cheaper,
I'll probably look at one of them. But maybe not, and just wait until the
16x come out. But I'd never call someone an idiot for not buying product X,
but instead see if I could help them get X to work for them. That's the
purpose of this forum. CAM doesn't get that.

I have DVD Decrypter crapping out trying to write to the Pioneer.
Right at the beginning, something about not being able to write to

Oddly enough, Nero burns the same ISO without a problem. Plus it's on
Win2003. So that may be an issue. Strange though. So I rip the image
with DVD Decrypter and burn with Nero.
I suppose I could switch my Pioneer and Optowrite and do a controlled
test, but that's fairly low priority.

I guess I must have bought my Sony drive "after" they worked out all these
supposed problems. It's rock solid with all the media I've tried.

But my question was whether this apprent reliability is tied in with
the 2.4X burn. If you flashed the 3rd party faster burn firmware onto
the A06, or only burned on a Lite-On at 2X, it would be interesting to
see how the opinins then stacked up.
I know that CDs were burnt at 2X for a long time.

The DRU-500? I have a DRU-500, was making a lot of coasters lately (latest
firmware, same media that I'd always used)... rebuilt the machine, problem
went away. Chalked it up to drivers being slightly screwed or a bad batch
of media. My impression is that the DRU-500 is media-sensitive.
Would I recommend the DRU-500 to someone else? Mmmm, maybe...

It's actually a U10A flashed to a 500A running the 2.0f firmware. I've used
TDK before and now mostly Memorex 4x +R discs. But it'll burn the cheapo
Compusa discs labeled 1x at 2x if I need to. Personally I think the
firmware updates have fixed most if not all the media issues the drives may
have originally had. Just MHO....

Second that. I've always burnt both CDs and DVDs at 1x. Several hundred
burns and not a single coaster or any compatibility issues.
I suspect however that I'm more patient than some...
