Does my Plextor PX-712A just stink?
Posted by dgk on March 28th, 2005

I ask only because I get a fair number of Servo problems when it tries
to verify a burn. It can't seem to eject the disk or read it if I
cycle the tray. It also has very poor success burning at anything over
4X with any commercially available media including Sony, Maxell, Fuji,
etc.

I have the latest firmware (which is about two years old, thanks
Plextor for keeping up with the times). Any advice appreciated.

My PX-712A came to life (it was a customer returned unit that I took a
chance on) when I upgraded the firmware:

I also had a glitch when I changed my BIOS settings for bootup order.

Has this unit ever worked properly for you? Hopefully it's a good unit
with just some settings on your computer setup that are confusing it.

I think that I'm on 106. The unit works pretty well on most media at
4X. Several times in the last few weeks I've had servo problems after
burning a disc and before it could verify. It never worked well at
anything over 4X.

But there may be another problem in the system that is causing this
behavior. I've noted that sometimes the system (XP-Pro) will crash and
it seems to be related to IDE issues because after the crash I have to
reinstall the driver (nVidia) before I can get the 712 back on DMA. It
crashes one a week or so (which, considering it's up mostly 24/7 is
not too horrible).

I think that I'm going to have to pull the 712 out of that system and
swap it with another system that has an I0-Magic dual layer burner.

Sounds like you have a defective PX-712A to me. BTW one crash a week is
pretty bad; my notebook (XP Pro SP2)has been running for 40+ days with
no reboot and no crashes.

Last night it burned a Sony and Memorex at 8X with no problem. It
upchucked on Maxell and HP at 4X. I guess I know what brands that this
one can tolerate. I never had a burner so picky, even in this machine.
But, I'm not really sure that it is the fault of the burner.

You're right about the crashes, XP should not be doing that. I have
two other PCs, also XP-Pro, that aren't usually up 24/7 but never
crash even when they are. There is something flakely about this one.
It used to crash regularly, like once a day, and give those "The
system has recovered from a serious error" message when it came back
up. I did some research and decided that it was either a driver
problem or power supply. That was after testing the memory (expensive
Crucial stuff) with prime95 for 24 hours.

So I replaced the power supply with a high quality one and the crashes
almost went away completely. I use it as my web server and for
BitTorrent, neither particularly critical applications, plus gaming
but I never get around to that anymore.

Most folks would be screaming at Microsoft because their XP is
crashing, but it isn't their fault. There is something hardware wise
on this machine that is just a bit off. Maybe the video card or a
marginal capacitor or something else. Probably also why the Plextor is
flakey. If no one else has these problems, well, that's why I have to
get around to swapping it with another burner.

If your firmware is two years old you hardly have the latest. 1.06 was

I just looked and I think what I said in my last post was correct as far as
version. I just updated my drive also. In my experience Plextor has always
been very good about timely and frequent firmware updates.
Good to hear that a power supply may have help correct your issues.
