- Dual Layer
- Posted by Bad Bubba on August 6th, 2004
I have a friend who has the Sony Dual Layer drive and for a test I
bought a Sony dual layer blank for $12 and burned a 6.6 gig movie to it.
The movie played fine in his burner using PowerDVD. It also played fine
in his new Sony VAIO laptop. However, it would not play in my Apex DVD
player (which until now has played everything I've put in it) or in my
Pioneer A07 burner. The Apex tried to start playing, but locked up and
my A07 wouldn't even recognize there was any media in the drive.
It looks like there are going to be compatiblity issues with dual layer
media and various drives. So be careful.
I did the test because I'm getting a new burner this weekend and I
wanted to see if it was worth it to get a DL, but at the moment I don't
think we're "there" yet.

Well he did buy the Sony....
If he'd have bought the NEC or Pioneer, he could have got hacked
firmware with BitSetting, that would have helped.
Also, was he using the latest Nero with the correct settings?
Did he try making an ISO image first, then burning from that, or did
he just drag the VIDEO_TS directory into Nero?

Since dual layer burners are less than $80, why would you NOT consider
getting one? They cost the same as a single layer burner.
I would also not make a blanket verdict because of a Sony drive. Try a GOOD
drive next time.

Agreed. If you drag files from the VIDEO_TS folder into Nero, Nero
will place a layer break other than what is already on the disk.
If you make an ISO, *then* let Nero burn it, Nero will leave the layer
break alone. At least this is my experience and the experience of one
other I know of.

That was always obviously going to the case. Even with single layer discs
there are compatability issues so it was always clear to me that
compatability would be a big problem.
No point buying a DL burner until those issues are sorted.

Sony has to be the most rock solid of all drives. At least they were with
single layer drives.
I got rid of my Pioneer after three weeks when it died. The Sony since then
has never missed a beat and the discs burned are compatible with every
player I've tried.

I had the opposite experience. Every Sony drive I had (4 of them) starting
acting up after a few months. I eventually replaced them all with Pioneer
and they're still going strong. I later learned that Sony drives are nothing
more than LiteOn drives with a Sony sticker and that explained it.

A friend has found it necessary to create a iso image first then burn.
Burning from the VIDEO_TS directory seems to create non working disks.

Thanks, I'll let him know.
I ended up getting another A07 on sale at CompUSA for $39 (after $20
mail-in rebate). Evan at $59, it's a good deal. I paid $99 for my
first 32x CD burner once upon a time...

I am also thinking of buying a DL drive, and I've narrowed the choice to
three models:
Sony DRU700A
Hitachi/LG GSA-4120B
LiteOn SOHW-832S
Any thoughts, suggestions? I've read where LiteOn makes the Sony drive, is
that true?
I think I'm favoring the LiteOn.

My first thought is "he's missed both the best drives" like the

Don't get the Sony, the LG looks nice (does DVD-RAM).
I think BTC make the Sony drives.
