- DVD Backups
- Posted by TrailShredder on September 30th, 2003
Currently, I have been making backups of kids dvd's that I buy and shelving
the original. I am using dvd decryptor, then dvd2one and then burning it to
a dvd. Now I have just upgraded my HP burner to a new sony 510A and was
curious if my old way is still a good way?

Yes, of course. BTW, if you are asking this question, you have no idea why
you are doing these steps in the first place.

Knowing how, but not why, is often enough for some people. If the guy knows
he can put the master in the drive, run a program, run another program, put
a blank in the drive and run a third and the outcome is he gets a copy good
enough for it's purpose, does he NEED to know why?

Well, I guess I kind of know why. I was more curious if there was an
easier, faster way. I know when I installed the drive it couldn't do the
Decryptor because the region code was not set. Instead of setting it to 1 I
installed some region free program and hoped I could just do a direct copy
without trying to get around copyright crap. I know that the decryptor
removes copyright protection, DVD2one makes it small enough to fit on a 4.7
GB single layer DVD by eliminating menus, languages, and extras. Do I need
to know any more than that? Maybe, Am I wasting my time with this region
free thing?

You might want to give DVDShrink (freeware) a try. The resulting files can
be written to a DVD-Video disk using Nero or similar.

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.
