- DVD-CDR Compatability

Forgive me if this is not the correct forum.
A friend received a CD-Rom from his daughter on which she had copied
some 8mm family films
(I have no idea what software or format was used). He can play the video
on his computer CD but not on his DVD player. He took the CD to a
neighbor and the neighbor was able to play it both on his computer CD
drive and hi DVD player.
I seem to recall that there is a feature required on the DVD to read the
appropriaye format but don't recall what it's called.. I realize I'm a
little short on inf here(this came up at a cocktail party over the
holiday) but would appreciate any help or information given.
TIA...John

not pic cd or mp3. all depends on unit.

I think most all DVD players can play VCD's, but I could be wrong. It could
possibly be a media issue (can't be read on this particular player).

I'm assuming this is video. Most, if not all DVD players can play VCD
discs, so unless the player just doesn't like that particular brand of
CD media, that's probably not the issue.
The only other thing I can think of is that maybe the the video on
that disc was DIVX encoded (www.divx.com). Your player has to support
DIVX playback (DivX the video encoding standard, not the disposable
DVD standard) to play such files. Not many players have this feature.
Some models that support the capability are listed on the divx site
under the HARDWARE tab.

Some really old ones only play VCD's if recorded on CD-RW media.

On one TV type dvdr I saw, you have to specifically enable some modes
