- DVD+R Freezing PC
- Posted by Andy on October 27th, 2004
Hi, Does anyone know why I can play a commercially bought DVD in my PC DVD
Writer but as soon as I put my DVD+R Disc in with recorded material from a
standalone DVD Recorder it loads then freezes up my PC mouse as well and
even CTRL/ALT/DEL don't work and I have to turn off PC and then back on.
Operating system is Windows ME, DVD Writer has latest F/W loaded, and the
DVD+R disc in question has been Finalised and will play on other standalone
DVD Players - its strange.

Win ME and 98 are known for their lack of robustness, and the video
subsystem is weak as well.
Win 2000 and XP brought enormous reliability improvements in these areas.
It's likely that there's a way to fix your dilemma without changing the OS,
but this old OS lacks any support and it's time to move on.
If you have at least a high-end P3 processor and 256 MB RAM, it might be
worth the small investment to move up to 2000 or XP. The improvement is very
refreshing. All video media play well on XP.

Why are you using Windows ME. The worst operating system since IBM
DOS 4.0. The first you should do is replace ME with XP and you will
probably see a marked improvement with everything.

Update: I have tried playing the DVD+R in the DRW1108IM on a PC with Windows
XP Home and with the same spec's and it plays fine yet when I put the
DRW1108IM back into my PC with Windows ME then playing the same DVD+R disc
it just lock's up my PC. Yet I can play normal DVD discs with my Windows ME.
Do you know what corrupt files there might be in my Windows ME that is
stopping me from playing a DVD+R Disc?
Naw, I don't want to update to XP yet I am getting on fine in every other
respect with Windows ME and cannot understand why other people slag off ME
so much. Its too drastic for me to change the OS just because it wont play
my DVD+R Disc!

My guess is Windows ME. Do the upgrade. You'll be surprised. Either version
of XP will make the world of difference.
