DVD recorder able to record and watch TV simultaneously?
Posted by JIzzy on February 21st, 2006

Hi there,

we have just bought a Daewoo DVD recorder and have connected it to the
TV along with a Freeview set top box. unfortunately, we have not been
able to figure out how to record a programme on one channel and then
watch other channels at the same time - is this possible? we have
exhausted the instruction booklets provided and were hoping that people
on here would be able to offer any help at all!
thank you in advance
regards
Jonathan

I don't know the Daewoo, but unless it has two tuners, it is not possible.

Unless you're prepared to stump up for another Freeview box, so you have one
for the TV and one for the recorder, you're really stuck with what's on the
five "normal" TV channels you can get on the TV...

uk.media.dvd is a bit more UK-centric than this NG

what the OP wants to do is perfectly feesible without another freeview box.
You have in effect a total of 3 tuners, your TV, the one in the DVD
recorder and your freeview box.

Theres various ways to connect things up and you shouldnt have any probelm
at all connecting it up so you can record a channel from the freeview box
to your dvd recorder and watch a different channel on the TV tuner, you
could also record channels 1 to 5 on your DVD recorder and watch a freeview
channel on your TV.
let us know a few more details about what in/out cockets you have on your
TV, Freeview box and your DVD recorder.

If you want to record one Freeview channel and watch another then the
answer's no. All you can do is watch an analogue channel while recording
Freeview or visa versa unless you buy another Freeview box.

My Dh has hooked up ours with splitters. I can watch one thing on the cable
box, tape another (on vhs) & record another on the DVR. It works great!!

One wonders if digital TV will eventually turn out like analog--the cable
company sends the complete band at once and you simply tune to whatever
station you want. That way you can record as many channels as you desire,
while watching yet another one. My guess is that cable companies will
continue to use their proprietary interface as long as possible, precisely
to prevent that.
