DVD Recorders
Posted by Charles Reimer on November 8th, 2007

I thought this might be as good a place as any to ask the question.

I am looking for a DVD Recorder as a Christmas gift, but I am having the
hardest time picking one out. I really want to get one with a HD as
well, so that is part of my dilemma. I have seen some pretty good DVD
recorders without HDs, but the ones that have them are usually a little
out of my price range. I have done some research on the consumer
reports website and cnet, yet nothing new and attainable has really been
released afaik.

I guess I am looking at either a decent Panasonic or Phillips, but I
could really use your suggestions.

Anyone wanna help?

Make sure you get one with battery backup for it's clock.
I got one without, thinking that I was only going to record manually and
wouldn't need it.
BIG mistake.
All the recordings are time stamped and the ones dated 1/1/2001 make a dogs
dinner of the list.

If you intend to record over-the-air programs make sure you get
a digital tuner.

Panasonic has not released a DVD recorder with a hard disk in over
a year.

The Philips model DVDR-3575H ($300 at Walmart) is a reasonably good
unit. Walmart seems to no longer offer the Polaroid DRA-01601A which
was equivalent to the Philips, had better firmware, and was $50
cheaper.
