- DVD Rewriter not recording
- Posted by stevehere on April 28th, 2006
I have a DVD rewriter in place of a video.
I have used several rewritable discs to copy TV programs onto.
What I normally do is fill a disc with different programs, watch said
programs and then erase the disc and start again.
Trouble is I can only erase the disc 5 or 6 times.
Is this normal?
There is no warning that the disc will fail it gives the impression of
recording but doesn't. It will even record at the start and the
program is there but then on further recording it fails as above and
the disc is useless so I can't watch the first program.
I hope the above makes sense.
Can someone tell me if this is normal or should I take my machine back?
Thanks

I don't know about DVD-RW but certainly with DVD+RW you can record and erase
the disc about 1000 times - I'm on to my 345th record cycle of one
particular disc I have.

I'm glad that someone is keeping track of this sort of thing. What recorder
and disc brand are you using? I trust that you will keep us all informed as
to the point where said disc fails.

I'm using a Philips DVDR725H/05. It has a 160Gb hard drive but I burn
recordings to DVD+RW for my wife to take on business trips (knowing how dire
hotel TV can be) and various other reasons. I record TV programmes in M4
format (so that I get 4 hours per disc) and I use Traxdata 4x DVD+RWs.
And yes, I'll let you all know when it fails

Thanks for that. Out of curiosity, can you play discs on the DVD portion of
your Philips while simultaneously recording on the hard drive? I bought a
Lite-On with a 160GB HD, but took it back because you couldn't use the unit
at all when it was programmed or while recording. One should be able to
play back from the HD or the DVD portion while the HD is recording.
Thanks,

Yes Norm, you can play DVDs while recording something on the hard drive, you
can play a recording from the hard drive while recording something else to
it, and you can play the beginning of a programme while the end of it is
still recording to the hard drive.
You can also archive (copy) a programme to DVD while the hard drive is
recording something else - it really is a superb bit of kit
