DVD+VR and DVDShrink
Posted by georgiarose on January 18th, 2006

Just wondering if anyone has experienced a problem with DVDShrink when using
it with DVD+RW disc which has been used to record content from a DVD
Recorder. I have a Yamaha DVD recorder and now and again I like to rip some
of the footage to my PC. The recorded DVD I understand is in DVD+VR format.
What I have found is that if the disc has had only one title recorded on to
it, then DVDShrink has no problem ripping it and allowing me to reauthor
etc. However, if I record more than one title on the disc, I get an error
from DVDShrink (I can't remember precisely the error - something about
unknown format). Is this a known problem, and if so, does anyone have an
easy workaround? (other than only recording one title at a time). I tried
ripping the disc with Decrypter first and then using Shrink but received the
same error. Thanks in advance.

..... actually the error I get is "Invalid navigational structure" so I
presume Shrink may be struggling with the menu system if it contains more
than one title???

This seems to be a systematic problem. I have a Philips Recorder.
I import to PC with TDA v1.6 (TMPGEnc DVD Author from
www.pegasys-inc.com). If you don't need to here the sound (for
cutting) you don't need the AC-3 plugin.

(I have had problems with sound drop-out when importing using TDA Pro
and TME (TMPGEnc MPEG Editor). It is repeatable on a problematic title
but doesn't always occur. The imported .mpg file from TDA v1.6 can be
used without problems i TDA Pro and TME.)
Hint: Version 1.6 doesn't know about the 16:9 flag in the +VR format
but that can be corrected with IFOEdit on the produced files before
burning.

I find the same problem with the Liteon recorder, so would also be
interested in an easy workaround. This is with -/+ R/RW, so that does
not seem to be a factor.

Yes, I think you are correct. Interestingly, if you try Re-author mode
in DVD Shrink, and there is more than one title, only the last title
recorded appears, but appears twice, with both versions being identical.

So far, my quickest results have been to use Nero Recode 2 (part of
Vision Express).

I get the same with +RW's recorded on my Tongtel (made by Malata).
If I delete the last program with the recorder the previous one then becomes
visable to Shrink.
If you rip with Decryptor do a "mock strip" with IfoEdit or try FixVTS to
make it readable by Shrink.

Own a panny recorder and a lg burner on the computer.
Do not have this problem at all. dvd shrink works a treat as do other
programs.

Perhaps the media you are using is not recording well which could
explain it not reading the media.

No, it happens regardless of the quality of the media, and regardless of
the whether - or + types are used. It is to do with the VR format, and
DVD Shrink not being able to recognise the disc navigation structure.
I am hopeful the next version of DVD Shrink will be able to cope, but in
the meantime Nero Recode 2 will do it in about the same time.

Is that right? I knew DVD Decrypter had gone, but hadn't heard about

Thats funny I have been using a Lite-on settop unit and DVD author for well
over six mo.
Yeah, there are blips in cuts sometimes. Havn't had dropped audio.
As long as you re-inmport the mpg file if you want to jump around and stuff.
Been quite happy with TMPGEne DVD Author Retail box.
Only one it rejected was a short 8min clip recorded on a panny I think it
was?
I also don't think the +VR mode was even considered for shrink.

Just to clearify that I don't have the drop out problem with TDA v1.6.
The problem occurs if I import the titles from disc directly to
TDA Pro or TME.

TDA stores one .mpg file when imported and that can be used without
the problem in the other applications. TDA Pro and TME stores .dat
files when importing and when the import is divided into several .dat
files, it is a clear indicatior that there is a 10frames or so sound
drop out in these points.

I have reported it to Pegasys.

Well,
that is good to know. Wonder why they changed the way of importing clips
for the dvd layout?
Maybe there wasn't any testing before they changed to using .dat files.
Seem kinda strange way to work with video and chop it up.
That right there sound like the best way to end up with messed up projects.
