- DVDR 890 16:9?
- Posted by Jeroen Vandezande on December 4th, 2004
Hi,
I have a Philips DVDR 890 DVD recorder. (PAL europe)
Recently I bought a 16:9 DLP projector and I use this recorder as a TV
tuner.
The DVD recorder is set to 16:9 and when I play back DVD movies it generates
perfect 16:9 images that are sent to the projector. But when I watch tv it
generates a 4:3 image... even if the program is in 16:9.
It has the same behaviour as a classic 4:3 television set viewing 16:9
programs (adding black borders).
Also recording from a 16:9 program results in a 4:3 image.
Is this normal?

I'm not familiar with 890 but I have the DVDR70.
It seems that your recorder is unaware of the format (and the default
is 4:3).
What input signals are you using?
I assume you input a real 16:9 video signal from a digital
TV-receiver.
If you are using the built in (analogue) TV-tuner I don't think the
video signal is in 16:9 format. At least where I live, analogue
transmissions have to be compatible with 4:3 TV-sets.
(You don't you have a PALPlus signal or a special cable-TV channel
that really requires all users to have a 16:9 compatible TV-set?)
If you are using a digital TV-box, there is a status signal in the
SCART input "Ext 2" that can get information from the digital TV
reciever when the signal is 16:9.
This information is stored with the recording by DVDR70 and works
during playback on the recorder.
In the DVD-Video format, this information flag can not change within a
"Title" so when playing the recording in a DVD-Player it will not be
aware ot this information and always assume 4:3 video format.
(It can be changed Title by Title if you transfer the recording to a
new DVD by a PC based DVD-Burner.)

Hi Jan,
Here in Belgium 80% of the television transmissions are in 16:9 Pal-Plus.
Pal-Plus is encoded in such a way that it is compatible with standard 4:3
televisions. (on those you will see 2 black bars on top and under the image)
So the build-in tuner of this DVDR is not Pal-Plus compatible I guess...
