DVR-108, opinions?
Posted by Lunaray on December 28th, 2004

My internal DVD read-only drive doesn't play DVD-R disks very well, so I'm
thinking of replacing it with a Pioneer DVR-108, any opinions on this drive?

Thanks!

Why don't you look for a review on it on the web?

I have, and the reviews that I've read are favorable, but I'm more
interested in personal opinions from real users!! Make sense?

Posted by Bill in Co. on December 28th, 2004

I think the reviews are probably more objective.

I have one. It's reasonably priced and performs well.

Firmware is updated often.

For what's it's worth, I have one and find it fantastic. IMHO one of the
best.

Good drive, if a bit slow. The 109 is due shortly.

The LG 4163, NEC 3500/3520, or BenQ 1620 are probably better options, IMHO.

I have an LG 4120 and NEC 3500.

The pioneer 109 is the same speed as the 108. Just ahas added dual
layer -r support for burning.

The lg are the slowest of the bloody lot and do not have no where near
as many firmware patches as the pioneers.

I own a lg and they do not burn all 8x at 8x but at a slow 4x.
The pioneer 108 drives burn 8x near 12x or 16x.

Pioneer more reliable than the rest.

If you buy nec then buy 2 drives so when one fails you can use the
second drive to burn to whikle the other is getting repaired

Benq is one of the worst drives there is.

My LG 4120 can burn 8x media at 12x. The LG 4163 burns at 16x - a full dvd
in 5.30 mins. The Pioneer 108 can struggle to crack 7.00 mins.

I have had about 6 NEC drives in the past year, and none have needed
repairing.

The BenQ 1620 is one of the best drives there is.

I can't say anything about my own experiences with those drives, but I do
remember a review of the ND-3500 versus the 108 (and the LiteON 1633).

While the 108 was a few seconds slower, it never produced even one error,
while both the NEC and LiteON drives had dozens---or even hundreds---of
write errors.

My 108 has been flawless, and I can wait a few more seconds for error-free
writing.

The 108 with latest patched firmware also burns at 16x. Perhaps it is not
the fastest, but it is fast enough for me and more than makes up for this
deficit in reliability.

What is this about putting out more patches faster???? Is Pioneer

Oh, the drive doesn't work like we claimed? Get the latest patch because
that might get the drive to work; if not, wait for another patch....

Your conclusions are poorly considered. The patches deal with updates to
the various tables that tell the drive hell to deal with constantly changing
media specifications. They do not deal with flaws in the drive.

IIRC, Sony dvd burners are now re-badged LiteOns? But may be not all models?

I am not aware that the Pioneer 108 is any more or less reliable than the
NEC 3500. I don't know the numbers, but which drive has more sales? I
suspect it's the NEC 3500?

The current poll in CDFreaks forum shows an overwhelming preference for the
NEC 3500 with 234 votes out of 508.The Pioneer 108 is in 3rd position with
just 42.

New firmware often makes the drive more compatible with new media, and not
just for remedying deficiencies.

I never suffered such a problem - but that is probably due to my lack of
scratched DVDs.

It could be that the Pioneer 108 is a better reader of scratched media -
although the BenQ 1620 is meant to be the best at this, IIRC?
