- Firmware update problem on Pioneer 106
- Posted by Tron[ADS] on April 5th, 2004
I have a Pioneer 106, which is a master device on IDE0.
It works perfectly, but I wanted to put a hacked firmware on it for fast rip
speed and rpc1.
However using the pioneer software upgdvd, it says no compatible devices
found, and similarly, using the flash utility, it agains says no target
device found.
Any suggestions as to how I can get this to work ?

Get the util dvr flash, and use that with the firmware file.

Have a look at the label that is fixed on the drive, and check the complete
modelnumber.
If it says DVR-106D, you are the proud owner of drive sold by Pioneer.
If you find a modelnumber like DVR-106BC or BD, you own a OEM version
produced by Pioneer, but sold to NEC or Medion or....
In these cases you can NOT use firmware files intended for 'real' Pioneer
drives since these drives use a brand-specific firmware

Its a 106D, and im a a total loss with this.
I tried updating the 105 thats attached to the same ide channel, and that
worked fine, then I tried doing the 106d again with the 105 physicaly
disconnected...same problem :-(

From memory, doesn't the drive have to be connected as "master" on the
"secondary" IDE channel, with nothinfg else attached to the same channel ?

No way is that necessary. I have 2 HDD's on my primary IDE channel,
and two DVD burners on my secondary ide channel, master and slave, and
they both burn fine, even at 8X.
Not only that, I have an extra PCI IDE controller where I have a cd
burner and a DVD ROM on the primary IDE channel and a third HDD on the
secondary IDE channel.

I use to use one machine just for updating firmware.
Found that the machine that had the pioneer burner installed just
blue-screened when trying to update the firmware.
The reason turned out to be the PCI ide-controller card (promise).

First, I've found that you can't use a PCI IDE controller with a
DVD-Burner to "burn", but you can use it as a DVD-ROM OK.
And, you CAN use a PCI IDE Controller to burn CDs, even at 52X, as I
do. (This based on trial and error with Nero, even true with burning
DVDs at 2X.)
Second, if you flash a DVD-burner, all the directions say that it must
be located on your primary or secondary controller in order to flash.
That may be the cause of your blue screen.
Even though my Toshiba DVD-ROM is on the Tertiary controller (PCI IDE
controller card,) I temporarily connected it to the built in secondary
controller in order to flash the firmware to no-limit ripping. I then
put the Toshiba DVD-ROM drive back on the tertiary IDE controller.

I do have an internal IDE controller card fitted, but there is only 1 single
hard drive connected to it, no dvd drive.
