- Formats +R and -R; HELP !
- Posted by Cap Smith on January 7th, 2004
My problem is probably elemantary to most members of this newsgroup, but I
am totally new to this area and all advice is appreciated.
I wish to buy a DVD recorder but do not know which model to purchase. I
wish to copy my VHS's to DVD's, and then be able to watch the DVD's on my
freinds and family's DVD players and home computers.
I am worried that after spending the time and money the copies will not be
compatiable with other DVD players, as I understand there are different
formats i.e. +R and -R.
Can someone please clarify what I should do.
Yours,
Ricahrd

Either format will be fine. Both sport similar levels of compatibility with
existing players. Neither is compatible with 100% of existing players.

Get a burner that does both +R and -R. LiteOn sells one for about
$150 or less. newegg.com has em, as does other places. You may find
that you have use -R's for some players, +R's for others.
There's a media and player database at dvdrhelp.com that might guide
your selection further perhaps...if you know the model of DVD players
that are your target.
But hedge your bets with a +/- capable burner.

Does that mean I can make one recording which is compatible with all those
formats?

The format is determined by the media, not the recording program.

No. With a +/- capable burner, you have the choice of using +R media
or -R media -- whichever your particular target player seems to like.
In my case, I've burned stuff with +R media that played fine
everywhere except in Mac computers. There I have to use -R. I have a
Plextor PX-708A burner, so it's a simple matter of a buying the right
media since my burner can handle both.

Since the OP asked advice for a _Recorder_ (which also would be the
easiest way to transfer home made VHS tapes), it can be added that
stand alone recorders differ between models in functionality, editing
features and DVD-player playback compatibility.
Some +RW types are better in some aspects for basic editing. At least
in recorders without HDD. Compare all features!

Hrmm. This is the first data point I have of +R working with the
mac. The +R's I've tried with my burner I could never get to play on
my iBook, or on my buddy's PowerBook. Interesting.
