Hard drive DVDR recording HD/SD
Posted by bruceh on April 9th, 2008

I'm trying to understand the OTA, High Def / Standard Def, and
DVD Recorders (with hard drives).

If I buy a HDD DVDR with a ATSC tuner and if a program is being
shown in HD, will I still be able to record it? I've read that
most OTA recorders won't record HD, so will it record it as SD?

TIA

I have no idea what an ATSC tuner is :O)

I did a little googling and it looks like it records it as SD. I
wouldn't say this 100% as I don't own an HD source.

The recorder will tune in a ATSC HD channel, but will record it in
standard defination.

Here is a link with more info.

Depends.......the program can have a "no copying" code (5C) embedded in the
stream which means you won't be able to record. the stream can have a
"copy once" so that you can "record"; also some programs may not have any
"copy protection" encoded which means you can record it.

But if you plan to output from the DVDR to a DVD recorder, then the format
would be SD; unless some new tech & 3rd party firmware/rom can get HD out.

Thanks Bill... I took a look at that thread and it's a long one.
I think I got it now.

Is the "no copying" or "copy once" being set on the current
DTV broadcasts? If it has, does it happen on just movies, or
does it happen on regular prime time shows or any PBS shows?

That's the answer I was looking for. Thanks.

That is a good question & no one seem to know the "real answer" as it is
"all the above"; sometimes the "no copy" is a mistake & not "honored" by
some; e.g sometimes a SA DVDR won't record while a Motorola would &
vice-versa. Sometimes it is the provider, eg comcast won't allow recording
the on-demand, mostly. sometimes it is the network sending the
video stream, or sometimes it is the local station doing it.

The avsforum will provide all kinds of answers & people reporting why one
can record & another can't.......

I don't think PBS stops recording, as I've recorded a couple of the Masterpiece
theater of Jane Austin's stuff, in "HD" format, i.e.the local PBS HD channel.
I've also recorded a few of the DiscoveryHD Theater showings & have sent
them to my DVD recorder, in SD mode of course, but still looked very good

Will be interesting to see if the Disney HD will allow recording, just for a
test........

ATSC is the over the air digital protocol - it is the replacement for

Does there exist a way to put HD material (in HD, not downconverted)
on a DVD? On a DVD<insert + or - or control-G or whatever here>R
or RW?

In spite of the names, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray aren't DVDs. But even
then, do recordable HD-DVDs or recordable Blu-Ray discs exist, along
with recorders to record on them?

Will the UK digital use ATSC? Will the US and the UK now be divided
only by a common digital protocol? :-)
