Has anyone ever come across this problem?
Posted by georgiarose on January 7th, 2005

A friend of mine just brought back from Thailand the DVD's for "Delovely"
and "The Village". He has brought back dozens before and has never had a
problem with his DVD burners reading the discs before. These two titles
however are not detected at all by either of his two burners in both his
computers. It is as if no disc has been inserted. The titles play fine in
both his standalone players. If he puts any other title in his burner, it
is detected and can be read, but these two discs refuse to be detected. He
is running XP Pro and both burners have latest firmware. Any ideas what
might be the problem?

I had a problem when an acquaintance burnt a copy of the out of print
sci-fi flick "This Island Earth". My DVD-ROM wouldn't detect the disc
at all, but the reliable Toshiba DVD upstairs did. My old Hitachi
DVD-ROM was super reliable too.

There may be a different in zone region.
He may have a faulty DVD disc. It would be worth trying the DVD disc
in a friends DVD player.

The burner does not even read the disc, let alone play it or rip it. As I
said, the disc plays fine in both of his standalone DVD players, it is just
not recognised by either of his DVD drives. BTW - he is running DVD Region
Free, so even if the disc could be read, zoning would not be an issue. It
is also hard to believe that copy protection would be the issue... more like
"play protection".

Copy Protection.
I had a audio cd recently that showed the same characteristics.
It wasn't until I found a program called audiograbber, that I was able to
"read" the disc in a computer.

Could be that your friend has a DVD+ burner, and the pirated DVD has
been burnt onto a DVD-, or of course vice versa....?

We are talking about a pirate DVD from Thailand - its unlikely to be
copy protection.

Hi georgiarose,
yes i have encountered a few disks similar to
your problem, i suspect disk errors rather than copy protection . Try latest
version DVD Decrypter 3.5.2.0 which i seem to have the best results for
these problem disks
use these guides http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/guides.htm
clean the disk, rip to the hard disk before copying and or compressing.
I have a dvd rom and a dvd burner...i try both for ripping if 1 spits the
dummy
try other ripping software if Decrypter doesn't work for you.
try these guides on another mate's pc if it doesn't work on yours.
there is no guarantee this will work for you but its worth a try.

You sure they are DVD's and not Vcds or SVCDS? (even if they are he should
still be able to see the file structure in windows explorer).

I'm sure any ripping application would work if only we could get the disc to
be initially detected by the drive.

Yes - they are definitely DVD-9's. They are not detected by either drive
however so cannot be explored.

Precisely - I cannot see how copy protection could be the issue here. I
don't understand how apparently they will play in any standalone player yet
seemingly cannot be read by a DVD drive.

DVDrom/burners with different firmware versions...you might get
lucky...failing that...put it in the 2 hard basket and source another dvd of
the same movie from somewhere else.
anyway, let us know how you go if you have success in this problem.

What makes you so convinced? In spite of the printing on the labels

Yes - both his drives are dual format.
