The Womble MVW is a great tool to convert .VOB to .MPG (and other) files.
I've never used DIVx - why did you choose it?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I've located the website for this particular
piece of software, and the first thing I noticed was "free trial". Which
probably indicates that it's not free.
I'm only looking for free software.
I've no particular reason to pick the divx format, except for the fact that
it's a format that DVD players tend to play. Whether or not DVD players
play standard .mpg/.avi, I don't know...
Thanks,
Ikke

Oh, well, if you do your own code, check out MOG.
FYI, VOB (visual object) files are a simple wrapper on MPG files (MPEG2).
The thing to resolve is how fast you can convert from capture format (a)
to other format (b) - some conversions are fast (e.g. VOB to MPG) and
others will take 10 HOURS!!!

Consult the alt.comp.freeware NG. There's a lot of good info there.
'Super' (from http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html) might be what you
want. It can convert almost anything to almost anything. [Disable cookie

"lousy?" MPEG2 compression can be poor for sports, but MVW uses the
maximum resolution it is given and stream copies the video while
converting the audio pretty well. What quality criteria do you use?
I really would like to hear.

What do you mean by 'output'

Well in Womble the quality of what you 'export' is determined by the
parameters you set. So I drop in a mpeg.ts file from Oz HDTV (PAL 1080i etc)
and output a very good looking DVD compliant MPEG file or I could output a
lousy MPEG1 file so it's not really Womble but the choices one makes. If I
import a ropy VCD file downloaded from a questionable site from the Internet
and convert it to MPEG2 for playback over my network it's not going to look
any better than the original. If you use stream copy then no encoding is
happening.

Can you give an exact example of input (that you like how it looks)
and output (that you don't like)? Can we be scientific about this?

Different Mpeg2 codecs use different algorithms to achieve compression.
Compressing a given source to a certain size using two different codecs
produces different results.
Wikipedia is always a good place to start:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mpeg2
Which one looks better to your eye or mine is more subjective than
scientific.
