- LG, Pioneer or Benq?
- Posted by HAWK on December 29th, 2004
Buying my first Dvd Writer this week. Can't decide between the LG 4163B,
Pioneer A08 or Benq 1620. From what I've read and heard the LG is the
newest and the fastest, with good compatability. The Pioneer suppose to
have the best quality. The Benq has gotten very good reviews and suppose to
have great compatability and minimum errors. Which one to get? Your
opnions? Im leaning towards the LG right now since its the newest and
fast...

The LG is indeed the newest and fastest burner at the moment, and does
dvd-ram also. I have an LG 4120 which I shall be upgrading to a 4163
shortly. I have an NEC 3500 which is also one to consider, and the NEC 3520
is now out in some countries - either is a better option to the Pioneer 108
which is significantly slower against this competition (it's more of a 12x
burner than a 16x one). The Pioneer 109 is due shortly. I shall probably be
adding a BenQ/Philips 1620 for its scanning and reading abilities.
My personal order would be :
LG 4163
NEC 3500/3520
BenQ 1620
Pioneer 108

The Pioneer is significantly more reliable long term. There are far fewer
writing errors (see CDFreaks analysis).

Exactly. Is speed (especially now by only a few seconds) *really* more
important than reliable burns?
IMHO, it isn't. Reliable burning is *much* more important.

Never owned a Pioneer. But I've never had burn problems
(or any other problems) with LG and NEC.

Well I bought the LG 4163 for only 90$ canadian and I'm very happy with
it. It seems pretty quiet and access and reading is good. I bought some
cheap Msonic 4x dvd+r and they worked good for movies and data. I can't
wait to try some of those fast 16x dvdr.

My LG 4120 can burn certain 8x dvd+r media at 12x. It may be that the 4163
can burn them at 16x.

And this is the review that got me to get another Pioneer:

Just look at the chart at the top. That says it all.

It would not persuade me to purchase any of them - one piece of media and a
single firmware, and at least 4 months old now.
As was pointed out, one of the reasons why the Pioneer 108 did well (and was
so slow) was that it did most of its burning at 12x.
