My compatibility data point...
Posted by Thomas A. Horsley on July 15th, 2003

Been experimenting with all the different media my A06 can write, and in my
limited sample size, I have to say I agree with the DVD-R camp :-).

I can use DVD+R, but it tends to flake out even on DVD players where it
"works". For instance, a JVC HR-XVC1U (a fairly cheap, but recent vintage
DVD/VCR combo unit) can play all of DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, and DVD+RW, but
for all except the DVD-R, it tends to flake out randomly. If I try to access
the menus to randomly play a title, it tends to freeze up and reset itself
when playing anything except a DVD-R. DVD-R seems rock solid on it.

I get similar results with my much older Sony DVP-S7700 except it can't play
either kind of RW media at all. DVD+R will seem to work at first, then flake
out randomly during play, but DVD-R is rock solid.

I hasten to add that this is a test with the exact same master content from
the hard disk written to each of the different media, so it seems unlikely
there is any kind of authoring glitch just in the +R disk but not the -R
disk. (For reference: TMPGEnc 2.513.53.162 encoded the mpegs from random
video capture data, Ulead DVD MovieFactory2 se generated the DVD file
directory structure, and Nero 5.5.10.32 wrote it to the media).

So there you have it. An unscientific microscopic sample size says that
DVD-R is more compatible with DVD players :-).
