Optorite DD0203 + TDK 2x DVD-R = no go
Posted by Will Dormann on October 1st, 2003

I just recently got an Optorite DD0203 DVD burner. (OEM Sanyo Unit)

The supplied Taiyo Yuden disc worked great. As did the Fujifilm DVD+RW
and DVD-R discs that I purchased. I got a spindle of TDK 2x DVD-R
discs at Best Buy, and I'm 0 for 2 with them. Nero gives a "dvd track
following error" and BurnNow gives me a "servo error". Both of which
seem to indicate bad media.

Anybody else had such problems with TDK DVD-R media? I see that the
TDK DVD+R media is on the Optorite approved list, but the -R isn't.
Maybe there's a reason for that.

I can honestly say I've had great results with TDK DVD-R with my
Panasonic SW-9571-CYY burner at 2X and my Panasonic DMR-E30 recorder
at 1X. Not one coaster out of about 40. Maybe it's the compatibility
of the units with the media.

I don't know if this is totally true for just TDK discs or if it's
just outdated information no accounting for new drives on the market,
but:

I see DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW in the stores, and don't know which one to
buy. Can you help?

Answer

DVD+R and DVD+RW media can ONLY be recorded in:

Sony, Philips, Hewlett-Packard, and Ricoh DVD recorders

Currently, this media is playback compatible with approximately 70% of
today's DVD-ROM drives and DVD video players.

DVD-R and DVD-RW media can ONLY be recorded in:

Pioneer, Toshiba, and Panasonic DVD recorders

Currently, this media is approximately 90% playback compatible with
today's DVD-ROM and DVD video players.

Keep in mind that the above formats are currently not compatible with
each other.

I had a lot of trouble with the Optorite unit recognizing most of the
branded(including Ritek and TDK media in both _/+ formats...wound up
returning it which was a shame since it was nicely featured. (I liked
the 8mb buffer)

Had the Optorite myself for a month and had the same compatibility problems
but with many types of discs sold here in the uk...although it is possible
to purchase the media accompanying the writer here.... its more
expensive...so returned to shop ASAP!.....not a lot of help I know but
letting you know its been a big problem here getting the best media..and
even if you find one it seems to be 50-50 chance on every disc....Change the
writer and save your money on the discs!!

Did you install the latest firmware (see
http://www.optorite.com/support.htm )?
Even when you bought the burner recently, it might still not have the most
recent firmware.
