Page fault when trying to capture video (NTSC DVD) using Ulead Video Studio 7 pro
Posted by Joe on February 9th, 2005

Just installed Ulead Video Studio Pro 7.0 and patched it with updates
from Ulead web site.

I'm trying to "capture" video from a DVD disk (VIDEO_TS) using the
NTSC DVD template setting.

When I start the capture, the DVD spins up, and I get a window with
the title "Scenes to capture" with buttons like "trim", "Back",
"finish", etc. As soon as that window pops up, so does an error
message saying that Vcapture caused an invalid page fault in module
<unknown>. When I try to close the error message, it keeps coming
back and I more or less have to restart the computer.

Any ideas what's going on?

I assume you mean Ulead MediaStudio Pro 7 and not Video Studio. There is
nothing in the specs for this program which indicates one may capture video
from an internal DVD drive. Ulead MediaStudio Pro does have DVD-VR support,
but that is not the same as the DVD disc you are using with VIDEO_TS.

DVD-VR is derived from stand-alone DVD recorders. Ulead MediaStudio Pro
allows the user to import these video files onto the timeline for editing
and subsequent output to various video targets. The ability to import these
files is also dependent on the type of disc the recorder uses, i.e. if the
recorder uses DVD-RAM disc the user must have a DVD-RAM drive in their
system. Whatever type of disc is used by the stand-alone recorder the
computer's internal DVD drive must be able to read that type of disc.

Capture of video cannot be performed from an internal DVD drive & authored
disc.

All the specs for MediaStudio Pro showing the types of capture and editing
support are at the following link:

Yes, I do mean Media Studio.

I am trying to follow the instructions on this page:

http://www.ulead.com/learning/msp/msp7_09_1.htm

It's the first page of a 4-page tutorial.

I am getting the "invalid page fault" error on step 8 (on page 2).

In my case, 2 boxes appear in that window (where 6 appear in this
example of step 8). In my case, the boxes are blank.

I don't get it. It's asking for a VIDEO_TS or DVD_RTAV folder, and I'm
giving it one. Am I trying to do something that it really can't do?

Ok, let's back up a little here. What source did this DVD disc you want to
capture come from? If it is a stand-alone recorder what format is this disc
itself? Does the drive you have match the disc format? Sorry, but you have
not provided specifics where these may help. If you are using a production
run DVD movie the video is not DVD-VR, and will never work in this scenerio.

Another thing may be the way the DVD drive is hooked into your system. Most
DVD drives (writers more than readers) should be the master on the IDE
channel. If the drive is slaved to the drive you are trying to capture the
video to, this may be a problem. I can't say for sure, but it sometimes
matters in the scenerio where two optical drives are on the same IDE
channel. The DVD writer needs to be the master and the CD writer/reader as
slave.

Give me some particulars and maybe I can help you.

It is a DVD+R disk that was burned in a DVD recording deck (not a
computer). It is basically a test disk that created for the sole
purpose of testing (or debugging) the video capture ability (or video
conversion ability) of media studio.

The source video signal was an off-air NTSC signal (the weather
channel). The disk has 3 scenes (or chapters?). Each is several
minutes long - except the third one (which seems to be blank or
empty). When I put this disk in my DVD player connected to my TV, I
see 3 scenes or chapters on the main menu (ie 3 boxes on the screen).
The first two boxes have a picture of the first image of that scene.
The third is empty (ie black) - nothing happens when I try to view it.

In my video capture experience with Media Studio, the error I get
seems to come when I get a window were I think I can select the scenes
or chapters I want to capture. That screen shows each scene in it's
own box, with an arrow draw, from one to another. In my case, it
draws two (empty) boxes but does not draw a third box. I wonder if
the fact that the third scene is null or empty is causing the error
I'm getting.

I can play the DVD in my computer as a video DVD, and I have copied
the two folders on the DVD to my hard drive and selected that as the
source for the capture. I get the same invalid page fault error at
the same point.

Is there alternate software I can use to convert non-encrypted
non-copyright video recorded on a DVD recording deck to, say, MGG or
AVI files for use in editing software like media studio?

Have you tested with another disc other than this one? Maybe the blank in
there is causing this problem in MediaStudio. Before going much further
buying more software record another disc and see what results you get in
MS7.

I have replicated this entire process on a PC with Windows 2000. It
worked - the capture was completed and resulted in a MPG file. Media
Studio Pro 7 was installed on this Win-2K machine but no patches or
updates from Ulead were done.

The PC that is giving me the page fault error described in my first
post is running Windows 98se. The hardware specs of both PC's are
identical. Same Soyo motherboard, P4-2.6 Ghz celeron, 512 mb ram,
Nvidia video card, 80 gb hard drive, Direct X 9.0c.

The only difference is that I updated the win-98 machine with all
available updates for Media Studio Pro 7.0 from Ulead's web site before
attempting the capture. Both computers are otherwise fully patched
with all available updates from Micro$loth.
