Panasonic hating on Philips DVD+R
Posted by gamefan72@aol.com on April 22nd, 2006

Hi. I just picked up a Panasonic DMR-ES35V stand-alone DVD recorder
today. Everything was going pretty well with it until I noticed that it
will NOT accept Philips DVD+R discs! It keeps asking me if I want to
format these, then I do and it goes through this process only for the
unit to still recognize it as unformatted. The box and manual clearly
state that this unit can record and play both -R and +R. The funny
thing is, it *does* accept the Philips DVD-R discs. I don't want to
have to wonder every time I try to pick up DVD+R discs, whether or not
they will work with this recorder. I heard they are starting to phase
out -R and +R is starting to get more popular, which is anotehr
problem. I just exchanged a Sony RDRVX515 for this because the Sony
was an open box model and was giving me problems (basically 1 out of
every 5 recordings I made was glitchy). And the VHS player on the Sony
was horrible. Very poor quality ... so I couldn't archive my VHS tapes
from that particular player, which sort of defeated the purpose. But,
the Sony was more user friendly than this Panasonic AND it did accept
those damn Philips DVD+R discs!

So, my question is:
Is this just a fluky thing with the Panasonic and Philips DVD+R discs
or can I expect this to happen with most DVD+R discs on this unit
(despite what the directions say)?

Frustrating!

Thanks.

I have an older Panasonic DVD Video Recorder and it is really picky about
the media. I have only found a couple that it will take consistently. Try
another brand.

Thanks. I'm beginning to see that homemade DVDs are a real crap shoot
as far as what players they will play in. Only official releases from
studios seem to play consistent. I have a DVD of some old home movies
that somebody burned for years ago (on a computer burner, I believe).
It would not play on the Sony I returned, but it does play on this
Panasonic recorder. Also, I burned a couple things with the Sony that
obviously played back on the Sony but will NOT play on the Panasonic
(yes, it said this format was supported). Well, actually, I burned 2
DVD+RWs and 2 DVD+Rs on the Sony. Neither of the DVD+RWs played back on
the Panasonic recorder (even though they said that format was
supported). But, they DID play back on my OLD Panasonic, which is a DVD
player only. Then, I burned 2 DVD+Rs with the Sony. Get this, one
played back on the new Pannny and one did not! Both were finalized.
Both played back on the old Panny. So, why would one play and one not?
It makes no sense. From what I've read on the subject, one will
probably have the most success burning onto DVD-R as far as the
likelihood that most/all standalone DVD players will be able to play it
back. Is this correct?

?
It would be nice if your reply email was correct.

I've always found - (minus) media to be better.

I use Memorex on my Panny E50, and yeah I know a lot
of people bash the brand but over the years it's the
one with the least failures.

On the pc I have been using ridata/ritek for years and
just recently switched to Taiyo-Yuden to burn to, and
the Memorex from above rip just fine.

My main player is a Yamaha S1200 and it plays discs from
the Panny and the pc without any problems.

Write me direct if I can be of any help.
