Philips DVDR880 Dual Layer DVD Playback Prob
Posted by freddyboy on December 20th, 2003

Hi
I have had the above dvd-recorder for about 6 months now and I am noticing
that on playback of pre-recorded dvd's which are dual-layer, there is a
noticeable pause when the disc is changing layer. I never noticed this
happening before. Could there be a fault developing? I put the same disc in
to my Toshiba SD220E player and it didn't pause at all at the dual layer
switchover scene.
Thanks
Fred

Yes, possibly. Drives do go out of alignment. I recently had to return
my DVD player to its manufacturer for a very similar problem when layer
changes were processed.

Hi Clem
I called Philips this morning and they suspect there is a fault with the
player-possibly the laser they said. Will sort that out in the New year as
Curry's will not give me a loan machine while the machine is away.

IIRC, a test including the time to change layer reported that only one
of the tested DVD-players managed the layer change without
interruption. It was Toshiba SD220.

To my understanding it is mostly a matter of having enough buffer size
to read from while the laser/decoder finds the second layer.
I was hoping that a DVD Recorder would have this kind of memory size
anyway, but was a litte dissapointed to find out that the Philips
DVDR70 don't manage to change layer without an interruption.

Question:
Does Philips support claim that all their recorders or only the
DVDR880 is capable of non-disturbed layer change?

Hi Jan
Where did you see this report that stated only the Toshiba 220 managed to
play dual layer discs without interruption?

Freddy,
The test I refer to must have been in the swedish magasin "Ljud &
Bild" a while back. Only 5 or so different models were tested, so I
don't claim that Toshiba IS the only one that can do it but the others
in that test couldn't.
I don't find the test now, so I couldn't check the model numbers but
I'm sure it was a Toshiba 2xx.

I will be interested to know if you get your Philips Recorder to play
across the layer change without interruption.
I only see it on some DVDs, altough I think I have other DVDs that are
dual layer. Probably, the layer change is positioned smarter on those.
It is annoying when it happens in a concert, altough it is positioned
between songs.
