Pioneer DVR-A08XL/Nero/write speed!
Posted by Lunaray on January 8th, 2005

I just installed this drive in my PC and I'm using the latest version of
Nero (6-Ultra)! This drive is supposed to be capable of burning DVD-R's up
to a 16x speed, but in Nero's configuration, it shows a maximum write speed
of 4x for it, what do I need to do to make Nero recognize the drives'
capabilities?

Thanks!

WHICH MEDIA ARE YOU USING?

Duh, now I feel really stupid, I just looked on my blank disc box and and it
lists the write-speed as 4x! That seems weird though, it seems like the
maximum write-speed of the drive should still show up, then if you try to
write at a speed that the media isn't capable of, I can understand getting
an error. Guess I better go look for some faster blanks to see how that
changes things!

Thanks for pointing my ignorance! :-)

Guess what? I took the 4x disc out of the drive and now Nero is reporting
the drive to have a maximum write-speed of 32X, imagine that!

The media determines write speed.

I have the same drive however after flashing with the latest firmware, Nero
does now allow me to burn at 16x if I choose. I also only use 4x media.
Naturally, burning at 16x fails but no problems with up to 8x. I downloaded
the firmware from http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_all.php

Put in a 16x disc.

With an empty drive, Nero typically displays a range of speeds that
has nothing to do with what the drive is capable of. Not sure how it
arrives at those speeds, but they're not an indicator of what the
drive's capable of.

Once you put in a disc, the max available speed is the max available
speed that the drive's firmware supports for that particular media.
Pop in a 4x Sony disc, and it will give you the max as 4x. Pop in an
8x Sony disc, and depending on the firmware version, it might give you
8x or 12x. Pop in a TY 16x disc, and it will definitely offer you 16x
speeds. Whether it actually gets to that speed? That rather depends
on what your horoscope says that day and what brand of media you
choose to use.

Get something other than 4x media...

Try using 8x media. Some brands will burn at 8x, 12x or 16x.
Or buy media which is 16x.

4x won't go faster than 4x as 1x won't go faster than 1x.

So why does Nero provide me with the option to burn my regular old 4x Princo
discs at up to 16x on my Pioneer A08? Sure, they fail, but he option is
still there. Burning at up to 8x succeeds.

Not sure what you mean. 4x media can got faster than 4x.

The burn speed is determined by the firmware's write strategy for the
relevant media. As you say, some 8x media can be overspeeded to 12x or 16x.
Likewise, I have some 4x media that my NEC 3500 can burn at 8x, 12x or 16x.

But if you mean that the A08XL cannot overspeed 4x media, you may be
correct, as I don't any direct experience with that drive, and normally
don't use 4x media now.

I don't know. According to the official list, 4x princo should burn at
4x.

The only thing I can think of is perhaps if you downloaded a
hacked/modded firmware that allowed you to do stuff like that.
