- Plextor 8X
- Posted by Pat on October 28th, 2003
Although its new and working out its kinks, I was impressed with what I have
read so far about the 8X Plextor. The folks at DVDXCOPY were testing it and
found a few problems with their software and the 8X, but were generally
happy that the unit was able to exceed its specs, including burning media
with speeds below 8X at accelerated speeds vs competitive burners. There is
also a new firmware 1.03 that is supposed to address some of the original
problems.
Anyone have information about the Plextor 8X?

Look at the short thread on October 20-21.

I'm not entirely thrilled with the 708 I have in my W2K workstation at work.
I had a couple TV shows on a DVD-R that a co-worker wanted, so I tried to
dupe it onto a 2X Ritek DVD-RW that I had in my office. The 708 failed
during power calibration and could not write to the disk. Right now I'm
writing that same blank with my Pioneer 105 at home with no problems.
I haven't had any problems with the Plextor and 4x Verbatim DVD+R blanks
once I updated its firmware, but the Pioneer is able to write on any media
I throw at it, including the cheap stuff.
For $100 less, and better media compatibility, I'll stick with Pioneer for
now. 8X burning is a neat trick, but right now the Plextor isn't reliable
enough for me (I only have the 1.02 firwmware update installed, I'll be
installing 1.03 tomorrow).

Let me know if the Plextor 708 improves with the 1.03 firmware. How does it
handle Princo 4X white tops?

I went from 1.01 to 1.02 and it made a huge difference with media
compatibility. With 1.01 I was getting lead-in errors writing to
Verbatim 40x CDRs and fixation errors writing to TDK 4x +R DVDs until
I upgraded the firmware. Now life is good again...
Is 1.03 out now? I couldn't find it on the Plextor web site...
Later,
Dave

Can you please post the media you've tried and had success using?
Have you used Princo 4X?

I don't have any Princo blanks to test.
I upgraded the firmware to 1.03 and it still can't burn the Ritek 2x
DVD-RWs, nor can it burn the incredibly cheap Xtreme 4x DVD-Rs that I burn
all the time on my Pioneer 105.
I ordered a Pioneer 106 from newegg.com, and will be putting the 105 in my
wife's computer. Hopefully the 106 will be as good as the 105 for media
compatibility (otherwise I'm taking the 105 back).

Its sweet with TDK 4X media and burns them at 8X like an Aardvark going
through a juicy ant hill.
