- Plextor PX-708 $299 at Best Buy
- Posted by TommyDale on September 21st, 2003
Just noticed that Best Buy is advertising this 8X DVD-R drive as
"exclusively" at Best Buy. Is it available elsewhere? At what
price? Best Buy is offering free shipping if ordered online, and it
is available in retail stores at the same price.

Stop think about 8x dvd-r for a minute - its brand new which means you pay a
premium £ 200 thats a small fortune!. There are no discs on the market
currently rated at 8x - when they`re are you`ll probably pay a premium for
the reliably good ones - if not you`ll have headache trawling thru all the
sites trying to analyse what is a good budget disc - when you get your discs
you`ll probably write the first few at 2x until you have the courage to try
8x - if one of the discs you wrote at 8x doesn`t play in your standalone
you`ll try it at 4x then 2x - 8x = more writes speeds = more potential
problems...
Besides all this its a 8x +r writer not 8x -r but think about my comments
anyway.

The price at WWW.newegg.com dropped to $250 for a retail box this past week
with free Fedex shipping. The Beige front edition is shown as in-stock
(Black front model an extra $4.99). If you don't mind online ordering,
that's big savings.

Are we?
The original poster(TommyDale) mistakenly posted 8x DVD-R
The drive is a 8x for DVD+R only!(DVD-R is 4x)- so +R/RW must of course be
the dying format?????????????
See

Plenty more about this drive here

Many times speed has lost out to value & reliability and I`m not just
talking about the cost of the drive.

'Tis another Best(?) Buy LIE to add to a very large pile of lies from this
place!!! It starts with their name!
With just a little shopping you can find this drive elsewhere for
significantly less money

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.

About $240 with free shipping on Pricewatch and as more brands come
out...prices will fall further. Still do not like a 2 mb buffer...the
cheapskates! I would rather have a 4x combo with an 8mb buffer...
sigh ....only a few drives like Sony and Optorite/Sanyo have the 8mb!

It just dropped to $230 today with free shipping at www.newegg.com. I got
mine 2 1/2 weeks ago from newegg when it was first released and it was $260
And then it went up to $290 and started back down to it's present price of
$230. Newegg is a great place to order from.
