Problems writing data Backups with Plex 712A
Posted by Cyborg-haf on July 18th, 2004

I recently bought my first DVD Burner, a Plextor PX-712A. I got the drive
for data backup and storage use along with CD burning. I have burned seven
DVD+R disks of large file backups to free space of my hard-drives so far
using Nero 6.3.1.15 to burn ISO9660 format disks.. Of these seven disks,
I've encountered data corruption in one or more files on three disks. Two
were Verbaitim DVD+R 8X disks and the other was the original Plextor DVD+R
8X disk (the only one to burn at 12X, the Verbatims burn at 8X). The
archives have md5 file verifiers and are not corrupt on the hard-drive; I've
reburned the same data on the next disk without error. My drive firmware is
updated to 1.03, the latest release. I've had no problems burning audio
CD-Rs (Fujifilm Japan TY disks) without any problems using Fuerio 1.66. I
don't try multi-tasking while burning, and let the burn run without doing
anything else on the system until finished. I've set the Nero to Verify
Data after burning, and the Verify failed on the offending files (and
running the md5 trips on the same files, even though the hard-drive versions
are OK). This is vexing; I've used CD-Rs for data storage for years
without problem (other than the limited space available per disk) and looked
forward to mass backup and deletes to free hard-drive space with the DVD
writer. My CD/RW drive is a Plextor PX-16/10/40 that burned over 1,000
CD-Rs without a coaster, and I'd hope that this is not a bug in the DVD
burner. The DVD drive is EIDE Secondary Channel Master with the Plex
16/10/40 as Slave. Any suggestions about what might be causing this problem
burning data .

I have only had this same writer for about 9 days now...and it has only
failed on one burn. It had copied 99% of folders to DVD but failed on last
one.....luckily all the other folders were on the DVD.

I do not know if this was a Plextor drive thing or a Nero thing - I have a
suspicion that it may have been a RAM problem in that my comp was doing
other background things when burning....otherwise I have not had any
problems on all the burns on various CD and DVD types I have used so far.
But I do have 1 GB of RAM however...

I must admit I have never had a problem when just burning any disks
whatsoever - at anytime - when burning almost directly after bootup.....on
this occasion my comp hadn't been on for almost 48 hours and had been
downloading file on the internet and virus checking, etc....so was quite
busy prior to burning.

But Good Luck in your search for the problem.....

I've experienced similar problems. I used various brands and format dvd's
and had nothing but failure.

The X box can't read any disk written by the Plextor, films, games or data.
Neither could my laptop.

Since loading the bundled Nero programme my system continually froze.

There is a firmware update but that didn't cure the problem.

In my opinion the Plextor 712 is absolute crap.

After 4 days I gave up and returned it to the shop. They were reluctant to
refund but when I told them that the Plextor website acknowledges problems
they were OK.

I duly bought a Pioneer 107. I've had a Pioneer from the start when I paid
£680.00 for the A03 - I wouldn't use anything else now.
