I had an odd thing happen to me today burning with my Plextor PX-708A.
My burning software (Roxio EZ CD/DVD v6) appeared to lock up 95%
through a burn that started at 4x in PowerRec mode, but had dumbed
itself down to 1x (despite DMA being enabled). The machine is an
Intel-based Windows 2000 sp4.
The machine was nearly unresponsive when I discovered this hang at
95%--I could get task manager up, but couldn't get Roxio CD/DVD
Creator to shut down after pressing cancel to cancel the burn, nor
could I convince Windows to restart gracefully. Instead, I had to do
a hard reset on the machine (reset button) to get it to come back up.
I nearly freaked when I discoverd the Plextor's lights weren't on, and
the drive was not responding to the eject button! The drive was not
visible in Windows explorer when the reset machine came back up
either.
So, I brought the box down again and did an actual power off and power
on with the power switch instead of hitting the reset key. This
appeared to bring the Plextor back to life and it's back to burning.
Has anyone seen this behavior with their Plextor?
Was some sort of protection circuitry activated and then reset by the
power cycling?
Here's the really funny thing though--the DVD it was burning when the
system locked up supposed 95% through... plays fine!
Any clues or shared experience would be welcome.
Best Regards,
