- Question about speed, newbie
- Posted by John on September 10th, 2003
I have just purchased an OptoWrite DVDRW± Retail and it says it burns DVD-
at 4x.
When I installed it in my computer I though I would give it a few tries. I
have a dvd movie which I tried to make a backup of, I tried two differnet
bits of software to burn the disk and both took about an hour to burn.
The media I am using is Datawrite Classic 4.7gb general purpose DVD-r 4x
speed. Is this speed about right or should I expect to burn a disk in a
shorter time.
If a disk should be burned in a shorter time could somebody let me know what
I might be doing wrong, I have dma set on all drives, thanks in advance.

Go to the optowrite web site.
approved media at 4x for dvd-r, NONE!
http://www.optorite.com/products.htm
I'd return the burner!
4x takes 14 minutes!
or get tdk +R 4x media, yes, it costs an arm and leg!

I just done a test burn with nero and guess what, it burns a full dvd-r in
about 15 minutes.
So all it can be is the software I tried to backup the dvd, I tried dvd x
copy and clone dvd. Is there a option in these two bits of software for
write speed or does it burn at a standard rate, ie 1x speed, any help would
be gratefull.

Are those trial version? Some trial version software only allow you to burn
at 1X speed.

How did you go about this?
Did you try a disc copy as that will take forever doing it between two
drive and if it works a big if because dvd movies are on dual layer
media but you may get lucky woith the movie been under 4.7gb.
Should take about 15 mins.
Use dvd decrypter or smart ripper to remove macro.

Then use dvd2one or dvd shrink.

Then burn back uisng nero.

If ripping is involved, then a lot of drives are limited to 2x. I bought a
LiteOn 165 for about £20 which can rip dvds at up to 14x (average is nearer
to 5x) and audio cds at nearly 40x.
