- Recommendation for DVD recorder to archive DVR programs
- Posted by eganders@yahoo.com on November 10th, 2005
My wife got me a Sony VRD-VC20 for my birthday which can record DVD+R 8
GB at 4X, DVD+R at 16X, DVD+RW at 8X, DVD-R at 16X & DVD-RW at 6 X. It
is aimed at video camera applications with several standard video
inputs and attaches to the computer via a USB port. It does not have
playback. I hate to take it back because it was a present, but I don't
think it is aimed at my application.
I have the Comcast DVR service using the Motorola DCT6412. What I was
looking for was a DVD that can record certain shows that I want to
archive from my Comcast DVR. I don't care to attach it to my computer.
I figured that I could replace my defective internal CD writer in my
computer with an internal DVD recorder if I want to record DVD's on my
computer. This was not for that application.
My guess is that I want some type of DVD recorder with playback
capability for my TV use. I don't think I need the ability to record
at more than 1X speed.
Can someone recommend a type and brand of DVD recorder for use just to
record TV programs--mostly that have already been recorded by the
Comcast DVR?

I use a Philips +RW Recorder for that purpose, although with another
DVR model. It can also record on +R discs but then any edits (hiding
and adding chapter marks) are not visible if played on an ordinary
DVD-Player.
+RW discs can be made (almost) compatible with ordinary DVD-Players.
The functions that still only work when played back on the recorder
are the Widescreen signal in the SCART connector and "Jump to Time"
command.
I can make those functions work Title by Title if I copy and adjust
the disc on the computer. (Then I can make the final archiving disc on
the less expensive +R media.)
I can also do more advanced editing on the PC and write back to +R (or
-R).
Another more expensive type of recorder has a build in HDD for editing
purpose. In that case a -R type will do.
Note that different models have different capabilities regarding
selecting recording time (quality levels) and type of input and output
signal types.
