Recordable DVD advice
Posted by Guilbert on January 9th, 2005

I have stayed clear of recordable DVD for both TV use and
computer use as I wanted to see what format would 'win'.

My understanding is there are three formats DVD-, DVD+
and DVD RAM.

From what I can see DVD- is wining, is that right ?

Is it safe to go with DVD- or is the battle still being fought ?

If DVD- is the winner, anyone suggest a reasonable DVD recorder
for home TV use (in UK) ?

Or is it best to skip DVD and hang on for Blu-Ray. If so when
can we expect it ?

So many questions.

GET ONE THAT DOES ALL THREE

No format will 'win'. This is not a race.

Both formats will remain supported for the foreseeable future.
Unless, you intend to distribute your video to others, (and that
is only on a limited basis); the compatibility you need is with
whatever you will play them on. For your own use either or
both formats will do. It's not like Beta vs. VHS.

If you were producing any significant number for distribution,
you would have them pressed. The pressed DVDs will play in
all players.

Luck;

IMO: DVD- is sort of winning on the DVDr side, and DVD+ is sort of winning
on the PC side. But, as far as blank media goes, it's a wash. Both "+" and
"-" may become obsolete before there's a clear winner. DVD RAM is the real
orphan here, I have yet to see a set-top DVD player that supports it.

These days compatibity is not such a issue and most players will play either
the + or - format. Unlike beta versus vhs both these formats aim to be
compatible with standard DVD players.
I would be tend to base my descision on the features the recorder offers
rather than the format. Having said that the - camp seems to have the better
range and often DVD ram will be supported by these recorders. On the + side
the main company is Philips and while the + format has some features -
doesn't up to now Philips have let that side down with bad recorders.

There are Panasonic and Toshiba set-tops that play DVD-RAM.

I use both DVD-R and DVD+R for permanent recordings (mostly DVD-R).
However I always use DVD+RW rather than DVD-RW for temporary
recordings. The reason -- DVD+RW will erase in 8 seconds vs 1:30 for
DVD-RW.
