- Req help with large VOB file
- Posted by Cliff on February 27th, 2005
To make a long story short.
I've got a large avi file
AVIcodec tells me its a
File : 726 MB (715 MB), duration: 1:12:48, type: MPG, 1 audio
stream(s), quality: 56 %
Encoded it to a VOB file as to burn to DVD.
The VOB file is too large for Nero to burn so after visiting the Google
gods, I found
VOBedit. Followed instructions at
http://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=251085
However, when I click the save button, nothing happens. Nada.
How can I successfully burn this to DVD? What other tools might I try?
I thought I could split the file into 2 parts with NeroVision Express
but had no luck there.
I also have Pinnacle Studio 9, DVD shrink, DVDdecrypter,IFOedit on hand

What does "GSpot" give you when you render the file?
AVI with MPEG program streams are seldom DVD compliant.
I have no idea what that "quality: 56 %" could refer to. I don't
think the MPEG header data includes "encoder quality setting
used" data, but I could be wrong. If that's what it is, it would
make me nervous.
What is most likely is that you have a MPEG4 or Divx file,
except I would expect more than 56% Quality for a 1hour
13min clip at 715MB.

Thanks for your help Ken.
Apparently this file is one not supported by Gspot but I rendered it
anyway came up with the following
Stream Type and A/V interleave
type: video/mpeg
IMRR n.a.
I/L n.a
Both Video and Audioboxes
all entires n.a.
Rendering
(S) --> MPEG-1 Stream Splitter --> MPEG Video Decoder --> (R)
(S) --> MPEG-1 Stream Splitter --> MPEG Audio Decoder --> AC3Filter -->
Morgan Stream Switcher --> (R)
Under the rendering results I got

Maybe for next Christmas, I will ask Santa to for everyone to agree to
one or two video format. lol

Don't know how I left this off my original post but AVIcodec also
replied with
File : 726 MB (715 MB), duration: 1:12:48, type: MPG, 1 audio
stream(s), quality: 56 %
Video : 598 MB, 1150 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 352*240 (4:3), MPG1 = MPEG
1 (VCD), Supported
Audio : 116 MB, 224 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x51 = Mpeg-1
audio Layer 2 [0xc0], Supported
Didn't notice the mention of VCD before so maybe I should be checking
into how to convert a VCD to DVD format also. Did find some info at
www.dvd-guides.com such as
http://www.dvd-guides.com/content/view/57/59/. Not sure which one of the
several articles/methods suggested by dvd-guide is simplest or best.

Ok then, what you have is DVD compliant. It should have a
..mpg extension not .avi. If you want you can just use any good
Author program like TMPGEnc DVD Author (TDA) to make
a DVD. You might want to see if you can find 5 more just
like it because 6 of them will fit on a DVD.
If you use TDA it will automatically convert your audio sample
rate to 48k. www.pegasys-inc.com
Of course, you can just burn what you have to a CD, almost
all DVD players will play a standard VCD, like what you have.

Thats what I thought but doesnt it have to be MPEG2 to be DVD compliant?
I tried buring it with the latest NERO but I get following error.
"Unable to prepare data for recording.
Prepare session failed.
Transcoding of videos failed"
I am uncertain what is causing this error.
Tried also to burn using Pinnacle Studio 9 which did burn but "will not
play this type of DVD" on my standalone. Plays ok on PC. Have used these
discs successfully burning typical VOB files.
Am now using TMPGEnc to see what happens.
Thanks for the advise. Ill post back my results.
This project certainly isnt worth the time spent but it seems Im on a
mission to succeed. lol

There is one format for DVD that is MPEG1, all the rest are
MPEG2. Check the Help of TDA and under "TMPGEnc DVD
Author Specifications" for MPEG1. It matches what you have.

TDA worked like a charm. Once I figured out the menu what nots and such,
it was a breeze.
Thanks for all the help!
Now to check out the Pegasys product line and see just what packages I
really need.
After all, something that works that well, is worth paying for. At lease
once in a while. lol
Any suggestions? Is there something in the Bundled package thats
missing and might be handy to have?

MPEG Editor for now. You might download the free 2.5
Encoder from the other site, it may be all you need. The
MPEG Tools included with the free version will mux&demux
as well as make GOP based cuts.
There is a lot more that you can do with TDA's menus than is
apparent at first glance. It helps if you have some good fonts
on your system. Be sure to make your own menu "Themes"
so that you can move things around and resize them. Motion
menus are really easy, I use the "Opening Credits" Intro that
most TV series have as my background clip and music.
