Should I Upgrade My Firmware for my DVD Drive?
Posted by Larry on October 30th, 2004

I am experiencing a couple of problems with my Plextor PX-708UF and
there are some firmware updates on the plextor website that I think
may solve my problems. My questions are:

1) Which version to I download? There are so many!

2) How do I check my current version in XP (I looked at the 'driver'
in the system information as instructed on the Plextor website and the
numbers do not look like the versions posted on the website)? I cannot
find the firmware version anywhere else (in bundled Roxio software or
anything else). Any ideas?

I think I can revert to my old driver (it has this option in my system
information). Will this work if I do have problems with the
downloaded version?

Thanks in advance!

try Control Panel/system/Device manager/dvd/properties/details (last
tab)

Some burning programs like Nero www.nero.com
(choose recorder option or the separate Nero infotool program)will
identify the current Bios of your writer.

I would also think that Plextools should have something but I have not
had a Plextor writer in quite a few years!

And yes, alot of firmware upgrades fix problems with
drives......Fixing problems and adding support for new media are 2
main reasons companies release new firmware for their writers !!!!

Cavaet...sometimes firmware upgrades can also cause undesireable
results as well, and if something unexpected happens can "kill" the
drive as well.

OR try the freeware version at www.dvdinfopro.com

Look under DVDR - 708A/UF (assuming you don't have the 708UF2).
Click on "Firmware" and choose 708A/UF.
The current version is 1.08. (At least on Plextor European web site.)

You have the choice to download a complete file that includes the
program that handles the firmware update towards the drive.
I have used that with my internal 708A.

The bin file version is somewhat smaler if you download the updater
separately. I haven't tried that.

Use the utility "Plextools". Under "Drive Information" you'll find
"Firmware version".

The Driver is not the same as the Firmware. The Firmware is programmed
into the drive and used internally. As I understand it, the Driver is
the interfacing program executed by your PC.
