Sick and tired of the M I bloody 5 spam!!! - Can't Google dosomething?
Posted by George Leithead on January 2nd, 2008

Hi all,

I bet that you, like me are sick and tired of all this M I bloody 5
spam that is flooding these news groups and de-valuing them! Every
time one comes in I use the "Report this message" facility, yet
nothing appears to ever happen/change!

Can we all get together and pressure Google to do something about it?
Anyone got any ideas on how to do something that will be effective?

The newsgroups that I can see that are affected are:
microsoft.public.pt.sql, microsoft.public.pt.windowsxp,
microsoft.public.ru.russian.server,
microsoft.public.sharepoint.portalserver,
microsoft.public.win32.programmer.rtc
uk.misc, alt.video.dvdr, microsoft.public.cmserver.general,
microsoft.public.de.german.windowsxp.gruppen.richt linien,
microsoft.public.de.german.windowsxp.applications
microsoft.public.de.german.windowsxp.hardware

A lot more groups than that are effected. I picked him up in aus.politics.

If you look at the headers he is currently sending from

altopia.com email abuse@altopia.com to get him kicked off their server

He was sending from newsdemon I complained to them and he has been
kicked off their system.

I am sure when he is kicked off altopia he will find another Usenet
server to transmit from. The more time he spends looking for new
servers the less time he has transmit more crap.

At the moment the posts are coming from Yahoo and Hotmail free
accounts. A better way to stop it in my opinion is to put on a
regular expression filter or get this kind of thing added to a SPAM
filter list (assuming the news groups employ spam filtering
technology?).

You use google, MI5 victim dosen't, google is only a web based access to
usenet. Google cannot do anything.
The MI5 poster, his name is Mike Corley, he is an IT professional but alas
he has mental health issues. Here are some details about Mike Corley.
He lives in London, UK. He first began his postings to usenet, BBS, and
forums in 1995, unsurprisingly first to alt.conspiracy.

He has his own website:
http://www.five.org.uk/

"There have been numerous newspaper articles and online thesis
about Mike's postings, this is a BBC article on the subject:"
http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/A164404

"And amongst many other covers of the Mike Corley phenomenon
there has been a modern opera about this usenet legend:"
http://www.thecorleyconspiracy.com/

The problem is amplified by posters who reply to Mikes X-post floods
without snipping, and without removing the crossposts.
But also Mike Corley sets "follow-up" groups to his MI5 posts, this is
where he hasn't actually posted to a specific group but it's listed as
"follow-up" in the crossposts, the lusers who reply, their posts show
up in groups that Mike wants flooded.
Mike Corley has set uk.misc as follow-up to all the posts, (which I've
removed) it gets flooded with the replies, and of course your X-post.
Mike Corley has been doing this since 1995, and he knows what he is doing,
he avoids killfiles/plonk/block by morphing and using pay-as-you-go dial-up.
Filters rarely have an effect as in this example, if you set the criteria as
"MI_5", then the flood morph to "MIfive" or whatever
The simple rule with Mike Corley floods is to ignore and not to reply.
Mike will take his medication and eventually stop.....until the next time.
But if lusers do the foolish and reply/x-post/fail-to-snip, then Mike Corley
sticks around.

I seem to remember that one of his posts had a abuse@google.com

Where would one discuss how to prevent his postings, or prevent
seeing them?

Why not use Bayesian filters? they would probably adopt and
prevent him from simply using five rather than 5.

No they are not. They are only the email address that he is using as a
handle (I doubt they are real). He is sending from altopia.com.

From your header you are sending from google groups using Forte Agent.

There is an easy way to eliminate these messages create a Cross posting
filter. A rule that says that if the message has been posted in more
than say 4 newsgroups then do not show it.

I am sure Forte Agent can do it. I am using Thunderbird and it can't
do it.

I use Pan news reader on another computer it was easy to set up a
crossposting filter and it works well.

You should have a look at Pan, I think it is better than Forte Agent and
it is free.

says...
Usenet is not Google. Until you have sufficient clue to at least vaguely
understand the medium you are using may I respectfully suggest that you
refrain from attempting to impose your will on others.

In the mean time learn to use filters. If you are reading Usenet by some
means that doesn't allow filtering then go get a proper newsreader and an
account with a proper newsserver (there are many excellent cheap ones out
there). Google is an archive and as such it can't do the filtering for
you or it ceases to be of value as an archive. A normal news service has
no responsibility to archive all posts and will usually filter out any
spam detected by the newsadmins. Google are doing precisely what they
should. You, however, do not seem to understand the medium you are using.
That's your responsibility to rectify.

Regarding the former, nothing can be done about that.

Regarding the latter: read up on filters, aka killfiling.

Here's another idea: how about retaliating, and flooding the perp's
inbox with a sea of messages? You can do so through his website, at
http://www.five.org.uk/feedback.php. (Be sure to use a bogus email
address or throwaway email account, like yahoo, hotmail, etc.)

Google Groups is a Google application, I do not see why I can't raise
this 'question' against Google to do something about the problem. Be

their servers (or doing something when a "Report this Message" is made
would also be nice!) ..frankly I don't really mind. I am sure that I
am in the exact same 'boat' as many, many hundreds of others.

can do with Outlook 2002 or is there any add-on that I can download that

it seems just too big and complicated.

But in all seriousness stand-alone apps that are designed to do a specific
task will always perform better at that task than an app designed for
another task with some extra stuff bolted on, eg e-mail clients that 'do a
bit of' newsgroups too, such as M$ LookOut and Firefox.

Yes, his messages are a pain in the ass, but I find

I've seen him interviweed on TV, read his web presence, and read his usenet

The guy is suffering from a serious and uncontrolled mental illness.
He has serious paranoia issues, and it's clear from his interviews that he
isn't getting the help or mdication he so desperately needs...(perhaps MI5
are blocking it, lol).
In a strange sense, I feel quite sorry for this guy, because he's obviously
going through some serious mental turmoil, and I wonder if I would be able
to handle it, or if I would just crumble under the weight of my own
out-of-control insanity.
