Sony RDR-GX300 says the disk is dirty.
Posted by Michelle on April 17th, 2006

Hi all,
I have a Sony RDR-GX300 DVD recorder.
Yesterday when I tried to make a DVD is kept telling me I had a dirty
disk. I tried another disk. No luck same message.
We tried a cleaning disk. Still no luck.

I opened the unit and it has a computer style drive in it. A Sony
DW-U15A. Does anyone know where I can get another one or a replacement?

Thanks,
Michelle

Not that I can offer you any help with your recorder, but WHY would
anyone ever buy a SONY product again after all of the crap that they
have caused within the past year alone?

Rootkits for your PC, anyone?

Understandable. I have a SONY AV receiver that I bought in 1999, and
it's still going strong. I also have a SONY VAIO laptop, in which the
mother board fried two weeks after the one-year warranty expired, so I
had SONY fix it for $300. That's my entire SONY product history. I
guess 1-for-2 ain't bad. :-\

Sorry I couldn't have been more help with your recorder.

Try a different brand/type of media before giving up on the loader.

I'm sure Sony National Parts Center will sell you one, at at least the
cost of a whole new standalone recorder.

You might be able to get by with an off-the-shelf DVD burner (Sony drives
are actually manufactured by Lite-On; resellers like Newell sell these
VERY CHEAP). However the loaders on standalone video recorders may require
custom firmware to interface properly with the control signals from the
recorder. A generic computer-grade drive may not behave as expected, so
it's a gamble.

Sorry for the typo: the dealer is Newegg. (http://www.newegg.com).

Thanks for the reply. I suspected this may be the problem. I will try
different media. A $30 drive would be worth the gamble.
