- spec. on size of hole in DVD
- Posted by Rick Merrill on October 23rd, 2007
I have heard that DVD specifications for the
hole in the middle are slightly different than
specs for hole in CD. The supposed consequence
is that storage needs to be done with the right
size hub. (AFAIK this is just a rumor.)

It has been discussed on video newsgroups, but I forget when & where.
The diference is slight, only a few thousanths of an inch.
I have noticed tight hubs when putting DVDs into CD cases & loose hubs
when putting CDs into DVD cases.
Or else it was just the opposite :-)
Try Google.

they could shatter? I think it was a very early problem, but something
that was cured, so maybe it was the hole size?

Center hole
Diameter
Shape of center hole
Edge shape
15 + 0.10/-0 mm
Cylindrical
Burrs on information side

Measured at 23 ± 2 °C

So the diff is 0.05 mm worst case.
Yes, there was a story where CD shattered on a DVD hub. Most
mounts these days use a three prong centerhosupport (for storage)
that has enough give to that shattering is not a problem.

wow, look at them figures! :O)
I do recall game discs getting cracks around the centre and one or two
actually splitting quite a way in. I can't recall seeing it for a
while but I guess out of all discs they're likely to be handles the
roughest, next to any film my little grandson is currently into, which
will probably look like it's been through a shredder in about a week.

I have noticed something else! Commercial DVD's being sold in their own
(rectangular) DVD boxes, with VERY tight hubs. I would almost say: designed
to damage the centre hole of DVD's. So I flung away these "DVD boxes" and I
keep the DVD's in "CD jewelcases" (in which they fit fine).
Another advantage: CD jewelcases take much less space on the shelf...

disc from. There's no release 'button' or such and the wide part which
holds the disc in place forces you to basically bend the disc when
