Toshiba XS32 Comments or suggestions for something else?
Posted by Jerry Napoliano on September 23rd, 2004

I've done a fairly brief (3 or 4 hours) worth of research tonight, and
I'm pretty convinced that the XS32 will work nicely for me. I
currently have a DirecTivo, and want to copy a bunch of old Adam-12
episodes I recorded on a local station off to DVD. I doubt they are
copyrighted, if thats even possible in that unit.

I need to be able to cut commericals out, make some kind of menu on
each disc for the episodes, I'd prefer a hard drive, and I want to be
able to play them at friends houses in a variety of players.

With these requirements in mind, does the XS32 sound like a good
choice? I'm concerned about the black level problem people have
commented on, but some say they've had no issues, and others have. Is
it just when programs being recorded are copyrighted?

If there is a better model for these requirements out there, please
make a suggestion. Thanks!

The Toshiba RD-XS32 will do all you're expecting (as I'm sure other
brands of DVD recorder will). I'm happy with mine, and haven't seen
evidence of the black level problem, and have tried DVDs from the
Toshiba on other brands of DVD players.

Copyright is not the same as copy protection (virtually everything
you'll see on television is copyrighted). Someone surely holds a
copyright on the Adam-12 episodes, but it's almost certain that the
recordings are not copy portected. When and if you do encounter copy
protected programs (HBO, for example), you'll be able to record the
programs to the hard drive and DVD-RAM, but not to DVD-R. There's no
correlation with a black level problem.
