Verbatim DVD-R rated 8X - Taiwan - Any first hand experiences?
Posted by Jim on January 25th, 2006

I received a 50 cakebox as a gift. I think it was purchased at Sam's
club in December 05. Not sure if I should open it. Does anybody know
who really makes these things? I've been to the DigitalFAQ media
page and they said Verbatim has flip flopped from MCC to CMC and back
to MCC. Anybody id a media code on these lately?

Opinions on this media would be welcome
Thanks
Jim

Never used Verbatim Datalife (everybody sells the DLP stuff where I
am), but no problems with the Datalife Plus discs.

Also, regarding the Media ID on those Taiwanese discs? It really
doesn't matter whether the ID says CMC or MCC if the discs are made in
Taiwan.

MCC - Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation
CMC - CMC Magnetics Corporation (formerly China Magnetics Corporation)

The reason why it doesn't matter is that Mitsubishi's been outsourcing
some of their production to CMC Magnetics of Taiwan for quite some
time now. The deal allows CMC to use the Mitsubishi Azo dye and
stamping dies to produce discs for Mitsubishi. In addition, it allows
CMC to use the same dye but not dies for their own discs. The
difference is only in the media ID on the stamping dies.

From time to time, CMC has been known to throw their full production
into it when they've had to fill large orders for Mitsubishi, which
has resulted in mixed media IDs. The Japanese made Mitsubishi media
is still considered better, but between the two Taiwanese made IDs
sold under the Mitsubishi or Verbatim banner? I wouldn't count on
there being any difference.
