Virtual Pressed DVD from DVD-R?
Posted by IanD on December 13th, 2003

Is there any software available that will make a DVD-R in a DVDROM drive
appear like a genuine pressed DVD?

My specific hardware decoder player software reduces the playback
quality when it detects a 'copy protected' writeable DVD media in the
drive instead of a genuine pressed DVD. I understand that this copy
protection capability is inherent in the writeable DVD standard.

I believe that software exists that will make an ISO image on a HDD
appear as a conventional DVD, but I would like to be able to just insert
the DVD-R and play without having to create copies on HDD.

There are some programs, Nero is one, that will allow you to change the book
type of the disc from DVD-R or +R to DVD-ROM, which fools the player into
thinking it's a pressed disc. It's called bitsetting. Not every burner
supports the option, and most players don't require it.

Is this the 'force DVD-Video compatibility mode (required for Xbox)'
option in Nero 5.5.10.42? I tried that and it didn't work.

If not, where can I find the bitsetting option?

I was under the impression that book-type of the disc was coded into an
area of the physical disc that is not writeable by consumer DVD burners.
