- What's so bag about Princo's?
- Posted by georgiarose on June 13th, 2004
I can't understand why so many people complain about Princo's. I've made
over 500 burns, probably 400 of those Princo's (the rest Ritek's) and can
honestly say I could count the coasters on one hand. I've loaned them to
dozens of friends, and not one has complained of pixelation etc. Some are a
few years old and there has been no degradation. Sure, the Riteks are also
great, but the Princo's, now at around A$30 for a spindle of 50 are hard to
go past IMHO. All done all my rips/burns with Shrink/Nero with a Pioneer
A06. Maybe I'm just lucky??

I use Princo's all the time, 1x and 4x bought from rima.com. They sell for
about $42 per 100 now, and I've always been very happy with them.

nothing wrong with those... except that you have a pretty good chance that
they will deteriorate after some (5+) years.. as with cdr...
maybe other dvdrs will have a longer life span.. but I have no idea...
Only thing I know is that with cdr... you can have some were the top layer
(the one u can write on) 'falls apart' after some time.. not saying that you
can't have 7 year old cdrs lying around... which I have myself..

I'm not buying that Princo junk, I'm sticking with G04's

I've never had any problems with Princo after at least 1000 burns. Every bit
as good as Ritek for sure.
LeadData on the other hand are probably the worst junk I've ever seen. 7 out
of every 10 were bad.

I have 3 year old cheap Princos that burn and play perfectly on any of 20
DVD players and computers I have tried. I have a group of 20 people using
them and they have had no problems at all. Frankly, I have had more
inconsistant G04 than Princo. G05 8x have so far been 100% for me.

thanks for that link... exactly my point..... top layer is most fragile and
most important.. without it.. there is no dvd/cd anymore...

"Also, like wine, discs should be stored in a cool, dry place. Koster's
friend Mark Irons, of Corvallis, Ore., stored his CD collection in a
cabin heated by a wood-burning stove. The temperature would range
between 40 degrees and 70 degrees in the space of a few hours. Now, the
data layer of some of his CDs looks as if it's being eaten from the
outside.....Now that he's moved his discs to an apartment with a more
stable temperature, he's noticed that the decay has slowed."
The discs were abused and subjected to conditions totally contrary to
manufacturer specifications and warnings. What did anyone think was
going to happen to the discs?
- Posted by Nick Legrand on June 16th, 2004
yeah well.. how do you think company's test stuff? they make the conditions
10 or 100 times worse to see how it's performance is...
you could sit and watch how dvds react at normal temp and humidity for years
on end... you could also heat the place up and do other stuff that isn't
suppose to be done..
You are just trying to simulate in a few days what normally would happen in
years.. that's how I look at it..
Not sure what's your point though... are you trying to say you can keep cdrs
without problems for 20-50 years and more? I'm pretty sure I wouldn't bet a
thing on it...

Well, to be perfectly honest, I don't know how many people are going to
maintain such a controlled temperature environment. I'm still not sure if
this implies that if the temperature rises to, say, 100 degrees F, the
deterioration will really advance, or not.
And I had thought he said he had always kept his disks in their containers
(which is better than some people I've met)!

DVD's are different in that they have two plastic layers sandwiched together.
On CDR, you are at the mercy of the top coating.

One simple look at the back of those Princo's should tell you they're crap..
Why does it not surprise me that you've had no problems with them.lol

I also have not had any problems with Princo. They work very well with
both my computer and Panasonic DVD Video Recorder. This is with over 300
of them used, stored and re-read about a year later.

I've only burnt about 80 and have just had one dud.
The writer wouldn't recognise it and when I looked at the disk there was a
bump in the surface.
Having said that I'm still very pleased with them
