Will the Panasonic E85 recorders record in widescreen on a widescreen (16:9) TV set ?

Will the Panasonic E85 recorders record in widescreen on a widescreen
(16:9) TV set.

Anyone have a wide screen TV set with any model Panasonic recorder and
does it record in wide screen or just in 4:3 aspect ratio?

They just record the video input, irrespective of whether that be 4:3 or
16:9. If that signal has line 23 WS switching that will also be recorded.

I'm not familiar with the line 23 signal, but I believe that
Panasonic does not record or retransmits the 16:9 / 4:3 signal levels
on the Video Status signal in SCART.

In fact it is not possible within the DVD standard to change 16:9 /
4:3 information WITHIN a Title. When recording (digital) TV
transmissions the format changes also within a program.

Philips (+R/RW) records the 16:9 / 4:3 signal level in SCART, stores
it as extra information (probably in the Video_RM folder) and the
Recorder retransmitts the signal at play back.

The flag in the DVD-Video kompatible folder is always set to 4:3 by
Philips recorders and IIRC that was also stated in a users manual from
Panasonic (could have been an earlier model than the E55 though).

Anyway, recording DVD-kompatible video makes it impossible to repoduce
the switching without creating new Titles.

Panasonic boxes do not record the SCART pin 8 signal, as you note, but if a
digital receiver generates the line 23 switching signal (in the UK some do
some don't, and the literature never seems to tell you which do), they will
record that, as will VCRs and TIVOs.

Yes, the title can be one or the other but never change. However, Panasonic
recorders will always record a 4:3 marker in every title, but if the line 23
signal is being recorded it can change within a title, and a TV using that
will go in and out of WS mode. This can happen in the UK when 4:3 films are
interspersed with 16:9 adverts.

Does the line 23 information get reproduced by a normal DVD-Player or
does it mean that also this variant only works if played back on a
Recorder?

It depends on the player. Some just output it directly, as do earlier
Samsung players (don't know about the ones made in the last couple of
years). Others strip line 23 from the video on the disk and create their own
from the WS marker in each title (as do more recent Pioneer players). I
believe the Panasonic recorders output line 23 directly.

I have an E100. I record wide screen by using the "Squeezed" output format
on my Sony HD200 tuner when recording HDTV. Works great.

What do you mean by "Squeezed"?
If you mean a 16:9 signal converted to 4:3 signal with the content in
letterbox, then it is not widescreen.
That is a 4:3 signal (that you can let a 16:9 TV zoom into the
contents with a reduced resolution.)

If you mean that you record the video signal as is, this is not really
squeezed until you display it in the wrong format.
The question is only how to get a DVD-player to tell the TV in what
format the signal shall be displayed. This information can be
transfered either in SCART or within the video signal in similar
manner as the Text-TV (Tele Text).
In most widescreen TV:s you can switch the format manually to handle
this.

The real problem comes when you want to play the DVD in a DVD-player
connected to a 4:3 TV that is not capable of converting the signal (or
scan) to letterbox. Altough the DVD-player should be capable of doing
the conversion, I don't know any DVD-player that can be forced to do
so when the information on the DVD says that the content is in 4:3
format.

I have a Panny 55 model with a wide screen TV and it records in widescreen
no problems. There is a display setting where you tell it what type of TV
you have.

For HDTV, tuner video output (4:3) can be squeezed so that when displayed at
16:9, the aspect is perfect. ie this results in a wide screen DVD with no
distortion. Although not high definitation, a good
HDTV broadcast results in a high quality DVD recording. Unfortuneately the
E100 will not record Dolby 5.1, the audio is Dolby 2.0.

If the 55 is anything like the E100, the setting you refer to affects
playback only and has nothing to do with recording widescreen.

Certainly seems to be recording as the picture is then much narrower when
played back though my Panny DVD player connected to a normal width TV Set.
