Case front USB port connection
Posted by MNaut on June 26th, 2004

I have a PC that has not had a functional front USB port since it was built
for me a couple of years ago. When new, I was told that the front case plug
"didn't work well with the mother board that I had chosen". It hasn't been
a huge issue until I got a digital camera and have to screw with trying to
lean over to the back of the tower and find the USB plug to load in
pictures. Recently I realized the plug was actually wired to the board
(apparently incorrectly), but still non-functional. The builder of the
system has supplied me with some fragmented information and told me that the
front USB port should work if wired properly to the board. After a couple
of attempts for specific directions and not knowing the proper questions to
ask, I think he may have given up on me.

The mother board is a ECS K7S5A SOC A SIS735 DDR W/SND and the front USB
plug is incorporated into a Premiew 300W TM-369 MID ATX Case

I discovered that the USB port (plug) is a self contained unit labeled
9908S061-004 with 9 wires coming from it bundled in a black sheath. The
wires end up (and are plugged into) the mother board pins in the area that
this ECS link indicates: http://www.ecsusa.com/support/p_k7s5a.html I
Although I have resequenced the pin plugs to what seems to be the logical
configuration, the port is still non-functional and I can only assume that
they are not in the proper sequence. If anyone has a clue as to how to
translate the USB plug wire labels to the board pin assignment provided, I
would greatly appreciate it. Both sets of labels are provided below.

Below are the labels for the 9 plugs attached to the USB port wiring:

ALL HAIL ALIEN ZORD!
After 2 years my front USB port is now WORKING!
I had the whole sequence figured right with the exception of leaving the 9th
(shield) wire disconnectd. That tip made all the difference.
THANK YOU!!!
