CD/RW drive doesn't read
Posted by Synapse Syndrome on July 24th, 2005

What can I do about a CD/RW drive that doesn't seem to realise that there is
a CD in it? I can here it spin the disc, but Windows, or Nero or whatever
says that there is no disc inserted.

if its an old drive ie been in your comp a while, it could need a dust blow
out. Do all the necessary power down stuff, remove the drive from the comp
and take its casing off. Normally 4 or 6 screws. Blow out the dust with a
clean air can. Reassemble and try again.

this is what I did after precisely the same symptoms.

after the blow job all was fine.

You can try another disc (preferribly a "perfect" retail
pressed disc instead of a CDR/RW disc), blow it out with a
can of compressed air, or throw it away.

You can also check the drive's jumper settings and cables,
but generally speaking if the drive used to work but now
doesn't (with no other changes to the system), it's time to
throw it away.

It'll be shame to throw it away. I might be three years old or so, but it
wasn't cheap and I probably only burnt under 20 CDs with it.

Individualism is a political and social philosophy that emphasizes individual
liberty, belief in the primary importance of the individual and in the virtues
of self-reliance and personal independence. It embraces opposition to authority
and to all manner of controls over the individual, especially when exercised by
the state or society. It is thus directly opposed to collectivism.

Quick check is make sure there is nothing caught up in the tray so that the
draw is definitely closing properly. I once found a piece of material caught
in the tray on my CD and although it looked closed, it was open enough to
cause me days of trouble!

(The material was the curtain at the window next to the PC, but that is
beside the point!!!)
