All I know is that he has a crash & reloaded Windows 98SE.

I am going to recommend that he removes all network stuff, inc'l TCP/IP &
then reinstall TCP/IP.

Buddy of mine has a machine that has kina hosed. His modem appears to
connect fine but... his browser (Internet
Explorer) won't connect, neither will his email client. I had him ping &
tracert from the command prompt & it works fine so he is connected.

I know, I don't have alot of information here, it's not my machine. I
have never seen this before & can't see a solution using Google, maybe
someone here has seen it. Seems like it is a port issue, as in his clients
can't seem to find them or open them.

All I know about the machine at this time:

K6-450
DFI MB
PCI Winmodem

solutions that I've found work with some success some of the time. Sometimes
a reboot sorts it out, sometimes it doesn't. If there is any other kind of
networking installed, that can sometimes mess up the DUN. If there should be
some network protocols other than the TCP/IP -> Dial-Up Adaptor then make
sure that they are configured correctly. If there shouldn't be any there
then remove any that are. Sometimes the problem seems to be at the ISP end
and you just have to wait a while.

If the modem appears to connect OK, but isn't actually connected, a likely
starting point is the network protocols and the settings for dial-ip
networking.

The obvious usual applies: if you know of anything that has been changed
between it working and it not, then that might also be a line of enquiry.
