- disable motherboard splash screen
- Posted by badgolferman on April 16th, 2005
When my new motherboard boots up the vendor splash screen is displayed
and I can't see the POST information before it all scrolls away. I
have looked in the BIOS but can't find a way to disable it. The only
pertinent setting I see is "Quick Power On Self Boot" and it's not
that. Even ESC doesn't make it disappear. Has anyone else
experienced this and is there a way to disable the splash screen?

No matter what happens someone will find a way to take it too seriously.

That appears to be possible only by updating your BIOS. I notice
there's an April 24, 2002, BIOS in two versions, with and without
splash screen.

There's not much info on this page, so you might want to try and find
a source for more before you tackle flashing the BIOS.

Additional to that suggestion, the OP mentions the Post Information
scrolling away - i.e. it is displayed momentarily. Boot procedures can
normally be paused simply by pressing the pause key on the keyboard -
perhaps this will allow the OP to read the POST details. It simply a matter
of hitting enter to continue the boot after the details have been read.

Look in the BIOS configuration for something like "Splash Screen" or "Screen
Logo"
It has nothing to do with the "Quick Power" option

What about Larc's suggestion of a different BIOS - assuming that was
compatible with your OEM hardware and didn't void your warranty? Failing
that, what about pausing during the POST display as suggested (before the
information "scrolls away")? I know this isn't getting rid of the splash
screen but if there are no entries in the BIOS settings to disable the
splash screen, it may be your only option other than Larc's suggestion and
if all you need to do is see all the POST info, this should offer what you
want. If on the other-hand, you want to get rid of the splash screen because
you don't like the look of it and not because there's any impairment to
functionality, I suspect you wont get much assistance from the OEM and
flashing the BIOS to a non-oem provided version may void your warranty - ask
them and see.

I see. When you wrote earlier that " the vendor splash screen is displayed
and I can't see the POST information before it all scrolls away." I assumed
that meant that POST information was momentarily there as well as the
vendors screen but it quickly "scrolled away" during the post process i.e.
if it was interrupted by pausing it at the right time then it could be read.
I used to work as a computer tech and I'd not seen any machines where POST
info couldn't eventually be read one way or another (usually through config
options in the BIOS or in the case of a Toshiba laptop by booting off a
special downloadable boot floppy). As you've already ruled out a
configuration option, my suggestion is to contact the vendor about it. I'd
be interested to know what they have to say!

Didn't your new motherboard come with a manual or a cd? You should
have something that tells you how to set all BIOS settings. The option
to disable the splash screen on my motherboard is under the BOOT menu
in the BIOS. It's called silent boot. If silent boot is enabled then
the splash screen appears. If silent boot is disabled then the normal
post messages appear. There should also be a setting that tells the
computer how long to display the POST information before booting the
operating system.

I accessed that particular manual and checked it when this problem was
originally posted. There's absolutely no mention of the splash screen
in the BIOS setup. It strangely appeared that nothing could be done
about it until I saw two BIOS files for the OP's motherboard on
Biostar's site, one with the splash screen and one without it. The
only difference in names of the two .BIN files is a "B" suffix for the
one with splash and "F" for the one without it.
Requiring a BIOS flash to get rid of a splash screen is a rather
crappy approach to the problem, IMHO. I know it's possible to do
otherwise since I've had motherboards with splash screen control in
the BIOS setup.
